Orion dropped the prices!
      #2431353 - 05/31/08 12:25 PM

Almost all of Orion's classic Dobs are now much, much cheaper! Wow, if only I was in the market to buy one.

XT4.5 - $189
XT6 - $229
XT8 - $299
XT10 - $479
XT12 - same

Now I think the StarBlast 6 is really a complete ripoff... Anyone agree?

They need to drop their prices more.

In my opinion, significantly more.

Why buy a XT12 when you can buy a Celestron Starhopper 12" for $699 and free shipping?

With the economy tanking, there will be further price reductions in the future.

And the longer they wait, the less time this year I will have to use a Dob...and the less likely I will buy one.

Whoa!!! I paid $600.00 for my 10" some five years ago and that did not come with all the neat stuff this package has to offer. Not that I am complaining of course, I am very happy with the scope. If anyone out there is looking for a great scope this is, IMHO, a great deal.

The XT12 is overall, a much better telescope. The Starhopper 12 is a good deal, but it doesn't have a Pyrex primary, crayford focuser, RACI finder, or many other things that the XT12 has. Plus, the Starhopper mount isn't so great. It apparently suffers from severe stiction.

The Orion offering being discussed does not have a Pyrex mirror.

As for type of focuser and finder, that is a matter of taste.

Have you been able to compare side by side comparable sized Orion XT and Celestron Starhopper Dobs for their mounts?

What are the other "many other things that the XT12 has"?

I am shopping for a Dob so my interest is real.

Thanks

Calling the 6" StarBlast a ripoff is a bit strong. It's fairer to say that with Orion's new price structure on their classic Dobs some may not find the price attractive. If you want a small table-top 6" f/5 Newt the 6" StarBlast might be the perfect scope. I made a couple of light modificatons to my original StarBlast to use it to track artificial satellites and the 6" version should work great in a similar role, in fact I'm building one from a spare 6" f/5 OTA I happen to have.

I am in the market for a 10" Dob. The finder on the setup sounds reasonably good. How would you rate the 10XT classic with the included components on a value scale and what serious mods does this scope require to be a reasonable tool.

Thanks,

Stan

I have a XT10i, not the classic. IMO the classic is a VERY 'reasonable' tool right out of the box. With a few mods it becomes a great tool

I bought a 10" Sky Quest for about $550! That's NOT incuding crawford focuser. A year later, I bought upgrade 2" crayford style focuser plus super 8 X 50 rt. Finder from University Optics, inc plus red dot finder. All cost me over 650 dollars but I am happy with my 10" Sky Quest!
So grab on big sale then you can able to afford to buy something upgrade on your telescope!
