Hi,
I just came in from observing Mars and M44 and made this field sketch. I hope to observe it again in 24 hours and see how far it moves.
The sketch got away from me--I started too big and could only fit about 2° in the circle template even though I could see much more of M44 in the 4.4° fov of my binoculars. I used color pencils on black paper.
Mars was a beautiful sight amidst this cluster of stars. While sketching, a couple of satellites traveled through the field.
Clear skies,

Michael,
Beautiful capture in this sketch. You are right Mars does look spectacular in the foreground. When the planets interact with the moon, deep sky objects and one another we are presented with great sketching opportunities. ---- Anthony Nice capture from two years ago.

Thanks, everyone. I appreciate the feedback. Matt, nice to hear from you--glad you're still kicking around. Anthony, nice sketch--Saturn was a bonus. Hope you all get clear skies to watch this encounter. The forecast for clear skies here tonight turned out to be wrong--I'm going to try and add the 2nd position tomorrow night. By then, the Red Planet will be well outside of the main cluster of stars in the Beehive.
A couple of thoughts on my sketch. I got in a hurry to post here last night and compressed the file a little too small--I've rescanned and reposted the sketch in a little bigger file size. I hope you'll take a second look.
Even though I captured the central portion of the cluster (~1.5°), I'm disappointed with myself that I didn't draw the whole target within the scale of the FOV of my binoculars (~4.4°). And my template was 4 inches (100mm) in diameter--M44 is big! I'm doubly disappointed that I didn't think outside the box (or the circle in this case) and go ahead and put stars all over the page where necessary. If I get a clear night tomorrow, Mars will be way outside the circle. I know some peple don't think a circle is necessary or desirable, but I feel I need one for a frame of reference to begin the sketch.
Lastly, I started the sketch using my watercolor pencils (which I like but haven't used very much). Big mistake--too crumbly. I had to go back and go over all the stars with regular Prismacolor white pencil. Other than that, I liked using the white and color pencils on black paper, rather than using graphite and inverting digitally.
Thanks again for the comments.

Here's the sketch with the position of Mars plotted ~48 hours later--it's moving right along.

Yes Micheal, 10x50 cheapo ones from K-mart, lots of haze in my lp sky but mars and M-44 were easy to see, mars is still good for something although too small to see much detail on its disk.

I'll bet they looked good in the wide field of those 10x50's--and an excellent target for LP skies.
I was just happy to see Mars again. This apparition was an almost complete bust for me--I think I only made about 3 observational sketches. Clouds, clouds, and more clouds.

Michael,
Great sketching of Mars and M44! Cool! Two in 48 hours is real cool that we able to see how much the Mars moved in 48 hours! Great job!

Roland, thanks. I know you've been busy doing other things.
Stanislas, thanks for posting your recent Mars observation--nice detail! I've enjoyed reading your reports and seeing your sketches on CMO and the Mars Yahoo group.
