Hi all,
In trying to setup a home webserver, I definitely need my router to point to a static internal IP. However, on my computer...when I type in:
192.168.1.250 255.555.555.0 gateway: 192.168.1.1
Vista automatically adds a 0.0.0.0 IP address and gives me some warning as to having two routers or something.
When I check config using ipconfig command, it shows the 0.0.0.0.
The only thing I've been able to come up with on google is that Vista does this when it thinks the CAT 5 network cable is disconnected.
So, I'm gonna try to replace my cable...as it has been cut and spliced (accidentally LOL) in the past, and then get back. In the meanwhile, what do you guys and gals think?
thx,
Paul

255.555.555.0 is not a correct subnet mask unless you did a typo (should be 255.255.255.0 or something like that)
Is the router configured to hand out IP addresses? I.e. it's a DHCP server?

hi rboe and all,
Thanks for the response; I am using subnet 255.255.255.0. My router hands out IPs from *.100 to *.150. The fixed IP I used was way out of the DHCP reach at *.250. I do have a webcam setup at http://promero.homeip.net:50000. Check to see if you can use it...use username: public and password 123456. That will tell me that, at least, my DNS is working up to the router. In anycase, I scored a 100' cat 5 today, so I will try to replace the existing cable, and I will then be able to let you all know what the situation is. I predict I'll get to it around Monday or Tuesday.
Cya fellow astronomers,
Paul

Hiyall,
Neighbors house no ...big box ugly.....instead, check out the "Skyshed" with the two red lights(at night anyways)
also, when I go to the site, it reads...http://promero.homeip.net:50000/CgiStart?page=Single&Language=0
maybe, check that your url ends in 50000 when you enter it in...not 50000. as shown in your photo clip. ..nice trick btw...thoe screen shots...Good luck.
GL,
Paul

I've been down most of the weekend. Network issues of my own (and ISP). Webcam works fine here.
Sounds like you are set now though.

Hi fellow members,
I did replace the CAT 5 cable to the home router, but the network setup still adds 0.0.0.0 to my fixed ip address. It in fact uses it instead of the one I programmed in...192.168.1.250. In addition the networking stops working. Does anyone know what this might be causing this...Vista tells me that its a misconfig in the networking gateway and that the subnet is wrong.
here is my current setup again:
-use dyndns.org as my dynamic dns providor, with promero.homeip.net as my website / host name.
-DSL service provided by ATT/SBC, which have dns servers available called: 206.13.28.11 and 206.13.29.11, respectively.
-Speedstream brand DSL modem with dynamically addressed external IP and 192.168.0.1 internal IP.
-Linksys WRT54GX2 wireless router connected to upstream DSL modem and 4 downstream items (2 computers, 1 webcam, and 1 xbox). Internal IP for router is 192.168.1.1...this is the only IP it has, to my knowledge. Router is configured for DHCP for IP addresses 192.168.1.50 through 192.168.1.100. Router is configured to automatically update DynDNS DDNS service with changes to modem's external ip automatically via special software application. I also entered the above mentioned ATT/SBC DNS servers under 'external dns servers' dialogue box. Also, I configured router "port forwarding" to forward TCP requests on port 80 to internal ip 192.168.1.250 and port 50000 requests to internal ip 192.168.1.253 (my webcam)
-all network connections via wired cat 5 cable.
-Home Web server: Vista SP1 on a Sony VAIO computer. I configured network adapter to have fixed IP: 192.168.1.250 on subnet 255.255.255.0 and to have DNS servers 206.13.28.11 and 206.13.29.11). Web server is Apache, if that may be of interest to you.
So there it is....it should work...my webcam works ok, but not my website.
thanks for your interest,
Paul

What camera you using? Does it include the pan and tilt, or was that a separate item?

Hi,
I had a webcam on a different network cable. I disconnected it earlier this evening. Its back up now. The DNS for it works perfectly, apparently. I in fact have another VISTA computer that only now am I going to setup as a web server. Hopefully I will be able to narrow down the problem I have with my home webserver as mentioned above.
thx for your interest,
Paul

Hi, I tried setting up the site on my notbook, and it seems to be working perfectly:
http://promero.homeip.net
let me know if you can see it. However, I am still stuck because this is my notebook, and my house computer still adds 0.0.0.0 to the fixed ip address. So, it seems all settings are correct, but VISTA is giving me a headache. thx,
Paul

You need to reduce the file size of your images big time. They are almost 3 megs in size when they should be less then 70k.
