Mattbtn I would go with Vista no question. Many of the issues you hear on the internet are from user ignorance, or bashing for the sake of bashing. Some of the issues are real issues such as the rare but need incompatible program or device that is needed.
I have used Vista since it was out feb of 07 and have had no issues. The features are great especially the search. The user interface is far better, better security and yes better stability. Vista is very much ready for prime time and it is not a bad news OS as some one who has never used Vista said.
I like Vista so much I bought a new laptop mostly so I can run Vista on it. I would rather die then to go back to XP.

Perhaps this is illuminating.
BTW, if you still are running XP, you may be interested in this about XP SP3.

Rusty, both those articles are interesting reads. The first one makes a reference to corporations non rushing to upgrade to Vista. I can understand why. Recently my employer has began upgrading to Office 2007. It is amazing the loss in productively here because MS changed the user interface. People spend countless hours trying to figure out how to do things now that they used to be able to do in a few minutes before. I have Power Point charts with embedded Xcel graphs that used to work in Office 2003 that have to be written because they done work on the new version. I don’t have time to do that. I used to be able to plug in the data and produce a graph chart in a matter of minutes. Now I have to find a Office 2003 machine whenever I need to do that task until I can find the time to modify charts. It is very fustrating.
But I will say so far my experiences with the SP3 install for XP have gone mostly OK. I have done the install on 2 laptops and 3 desktops. And all is well. However SP3 would not install on my Macbook under Bootcamp. The installation complained about a non-MS kernel and then the process aborted. Guess my MacBook will remain forever at SP2.

Most threads regarding operating systems do. Banning OS discussions was a tempting solution. We decided to do it the hard way, instead.
Now, everyone get - carefully! - back on topic, please...

Marcus, can't you disable the feature that forces the prompt to run something every time. I know that feature is a pain but I remember seeing a way to disable it. I actually like that feature because it keeps my kids from installing something on my system that I don't like or want on there. An extra click on my part is fine and I expect it now.
When you want to use disk cleanup on Vista one gets the prompt "do you wanna do this?" Did Microsoft forget that that function is part of their Vista OS? Perhaps when we go to buy a new computer Microsoft should ask " do you really want to run Vista?" and give us all a choice.

I'll add my 2¢
For me, computers are tools and I use them to perform tasks. I don't play any games. Got nothing against those that do, however.
I have a mixture of operating systems: XP Pro, Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger) - haven't gone to Leopard yet, and yes, Vista. In fact, I have Vista (32-bit version) on both a desktop and a laptop. I have been pleased with Vista, so much so that I can't fathom a reason why I would go back to XP.
On my Vista desktop (a Dell XPS420) I run all kinds of software: Sky Tools, Megastar, The Sky, Lunar Map Pro, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, UltraEdit, UltraCompare, Visual C++, Visual Basic, PHP, SQL Server, MySQL, MS Visual Web Developer, OpenOffice, Acrobat Pro, PitStop Pro, Apache Web Server, etc, etc. I have had zero problems installing or running anything.
Yes, the GUI is different than XP and it took a little while to get used to. To me, that's not a negative, just a fact. When I started using a Mac I had a similar experience. Not inherently good or bad, just different.
I say, to each their own. I like Vista.

OK, I'll chime in even though Im a Mac person. I work with our MIS staff at work ( a state of Ohio gov dept). Our entire network is Novell and Windows. We've been evaluating Vista for over a year now and no one wants to roll this out to the end users. Too many incompatibilties, too many issues and it's a resource hog to run reliably. There simply isnt a compelling reason to "upgrade" from the standard WinXP desktop. For now, we're sticking with the current configuration and forgoing any Vista implementation.

Hi,
The Vista on my media center pc (i.e. home server for multimedia) works good. I like the capability of the new Media Center in Vista to enable me to 'roll over' recordings, keeping only the latest and greatest recording available for veiwing. If it wasnt for this and a few other things, I'd stick with XP. The move to Vista for me cost $100 for the upgrade, plus $400 for 3.5 gb RAM and 1Terbye of storge. Add in another $450 for a new Xbox 360 (old Xbox media extender was only good for XP), and Microsoft should thank me for giving them the greater part of a grand for just an upgrade. But, do they? I havent gotten a call yet from Steve Balmer. As a comparison, if I bought something that expensive from a locally owned business, I'd get a hearty thankyou and maybe a real estate tip in the deal.
