I can't get it to run for more than a couple of minutes before it crashes the PC and forces a hard reboot. Can it be fixed?
Stellarium runs fine.

QuickTime 7.4.5
S/N 6.2.3
Plenty of RAM, healthy solid running PC, 500G drive
S/N is the only program giving a problem.

I'll check my spec's when I get home - the QuickTime version sounds like mine and I have version 6 of Enthuesist but I don't know the update version.
The only other thing we tech types check is the latest video drivers.

I replaced the latest Quick Time update with Version 7.3.1. The neweer version messed up MANY things...almost like a virus. I don't know what the lastest version of QT is, and if it still messes up SN so I'm sticking with QT version 7.3.1.
I don't think QT is his problem for crashing the machine. It just messed up all the menus and you couldn't veiw Messiers, or connect to a telescope ... etc.
Looks like either an install problem, or not enough Video RAM. Maybe he needs to turn off Open GL if not enough video RAM.

I've got version 4.5.0 of Starry Night - older than I realized. Randall, Thanks for the update on QuickTime. I was able to quickly down load that version of QuickTime and repair my Starry Night. Messier Objects are back!
I've got 32MB of video ram, running Open GL on an older IBM A31 laptop (same thing running on an older G4 Apple Powerbook - again, no problems).
The problem with these types of problems there are so many variables that it is hard to narrow things down.
Brainstorm; see if there are any BIOS updates; especially related to your video subsystem for your machine.

We could have 100 folks running it with no problems and that won't help the poor fellow that is having a problem.
Something is unique to his system that is causing a hard reset. With so many variables we have to narrow down the versions, manufacture etc. to see if he has a known issue with his or to help him look else where for the problem (Starry Night may indeed not be the problem; but something it does triggers the problem and MS Office may do the same thing if asked to do something similar as well as any other software package).

I feel his pain. Starry Nights Pro will not run on my OBS PC (XP-Pro). It runs on my other machines I have desktops laptops etc. I have updated all the video drivers and quicktime but the program refuses to run. It displays the events for the day (if any) then terminates with a standard Windows program shut down msg just when it begin rendering the screen.
At least it doesn't crash the machine. I have tried off and on for months to get the software to run, but I have given up as I was never able to pinpoint where the problem actually was.

Marcus; just for giggles; did this machine have a fresh install of Windows or was it the precanned installed that came with it?

I bet it's a graphic card driver problem or even a graphic card voltage problem if it has it's a high power card with it's own power input from the PSU. I had an Antec 550w PSU give me graphic problems and I thought it was my ATI 9800 Pro AIW card and sent it to ATI and they sent me a new one with the same problem and I tested my PSU and found it to be the problem. I use a 750w PC Power & Cooling PSU since Aug 2006 with zero graphic problems with the same old ATI 9800 Pro card.

To all those who have had Starry night crash here maybe a soultion.
Hi,
Make sure you have all the drivers updated from Dell's support website. Also, Starry Night 6.2.3 is the one that is compatible with Quicktime 7.4, so you should update your Quicktime.
If that doesn't help, you might have a corrupted preferences file. After updating to 6.2.3, go to the following folder:
C:/Documents and Settings/<user>/Local Settings/Application Data/Imaginova Canada/Preferences/Prefs
Delete the folder called Pro Plus, and restart Starry Night.
I had a problem with the update 6.2.3 pro plus that failed to fix it. Would go to the menu screen then crash and windows error message. The above fixed it so anyone having trouble try this out.

This is kind of a shot in the dark but does your Starry Night version support "shaders"? If so, try disabling them in the preferences.
Can you give us a little more information about what happens? Does it crash in the same spot each time (i.e. looking at the Moon or a star cluster) and does it give you a specific error message?
