LX200 8" EMC Classic: Questions & Answers
      #2432795 - 06/01/08 06:05 AM Attachment (27 downloads)

Guys, thank you for your support!

I open this new topic instead of the previous one. So...

The "first light" hasn't come yet, but maybe today ori tomorrow, it will!!!!

About the cable, I see that the scope uses only the 4 medium pins and not the ones that are at the far most. So even with a 4-pin RJ11 the scope will communicate normally as only 3 cables must be connected.

Furthermore, the RS232 (DB-9 connector) has already numbers for each hole so I think making this cable finally would be a breeze!

Just to keep in my mind the corresponding number of the pins and that's all.

I will make a ~15 meter cable (normal telephone cable) with the help of a friend (electronician).

About the DST I can't really find where in the remote control is the option to set it on or off. Is there a possibility the LX200 8" EMC (Classic) lucks this feature?

And I think the best is if DST will be off (or lucking any option) the time (GMT) to be set for me at -2 GMT, as the manual says that all eastern times right of Grinwick is set with a minus in front.

About Longitude, I also realized that I have a ~23o Longitude seeing by the google earth (my home). So the appropriate setting for my Longitude is (as described by the manual) in order to have the ONLY positive number to calculate 360o - 23o = 337o as my Longitude. That's is what is saying in the LX200 EMC Classic manual as all eastern Longitudes are minus and the remote only takes positive values. So the Longitudes starts positively by going left (to US, then China, Europe etc). That way I have to set all the way to the left , and that's why I must input the 337o.

All set and done I think.

PS: Correct me if I am wrong somewhere, OK?

Many thanks in adv,

George Altinakis

In my computer if I press the key to the left of the number 1 appears º, but my computer also has an "ñ" it could be a different keyboard
Don't you have this ºª\ key there?

Guys, about the "o" symbol.

I don't have any problem with the PC keyboard.

I meant that I have to input that in the remote control of the LX200 :-)

The only question is how I input the DST (Daylight Saving TIme) in the remote. Is there an option in my LX200 EMC Classic remote control???

Thank you for your reply anyway...!

Ha!, ha!, Ok sorry, I was only a bit surprised with the º stuff.
Unfortunately I can't help you with the questión, my autostar is the I of the LX90, but I didn't have any problem with my instructions, just followed them and piece of cake.

Yeap! And it doesn't say anything about DST time.

Any ideas?

pg 20 my book seems to hint that you use dst ..but then says if you are east of greenwich enter a minus gmt by moving the cursor backwards in the displayy with the w key, then press the next key to change the + to a -

which is interesting..sice you are gmt +2...this leads me to believe you were right the first time and your suppose to enter meade time conversion of -2.

(yet if you click the clock on windows and look up athens it is just +2)
unfortunatly it does seem that you are correct after all and the meade unit will take some trial and error testing.
once you get it set it will be accurate.

I cheat and use a star gps unit on mine.
I say do a two star alignment then snyc a target ,
then see what happens.

Thank you SouthMike!

At last a reasonable voice! (just joking)

I knew that I was right from the start about the Longitude and also for the DST option.

What I understand is that in LX200 EMC Classic there is NO option especially for the DST.

Instead the manual says that IF you want to use a DST time then simply add for the western places or abstract from the eastern places from the current Local Time.

E.g. If I live in Athens (Greece) and the GMT time here is +2 (-2 for LX200 EMC Classic, as the manual says) then my local time will be the normal one and if there is summer then I can add / abstract to the GMT +1 or -1.

All set and done then.

I am very eager to see my results when the clouds will fly away!

Good day to everybody!

sorry it isn't a better answer
but maybe someone from italy or spain could chime in...
sounds like fernando is using the newer autostar.

the classic book is not European friendly...
might have a go at the lx200yahoo group.

but by the time you find out trial and error will work.

Mine is not sane mind friendly, things are scattered without sense and important things (at least for me) like the sync option or how to enter R.A. and Dec, are in one of those TIPS apart from the main text. In the end I made a list with the important things so I don´t have to read the whole manual in the dark till I find what I'm looking for.
Next time I watch if it clears after two months of rains I want to calibrate sensors and motors, so I will make a summary in a paper.
And yes southmike, mine is the autostarI, I think is different from the one Altinakis uses.

Asturies, yes indeed, yours is different than mine.

Mine probably has a different (older) manual, so the instructions maybe differrent too.

Something else. I am ready to buy my first, decent eyepiece and I want a small help.

Due to financial restrictions this period, I am going to buy an Orthoscopic 6mm eyepiece from Baader. Is that OK with my configuration? F10 FL=2000mm. Using that eyepiece, I would achieve a ~333x magnification, which I found it quite good for my planetary observations. Am I right here or I can go ever higher (e.g. 5 or a 3.5mm eyeiece).

Thanks again!

I find that 333X is a bit high for my 8 inch Meade EMC, and I view under good conditions. In principle you can go to 400X with your scope, but I don't go higher than 285X, with a 7mm eyepiece. But 5mm might work for you.

8mm tv plossl or similar is a good eyepiece ..
do you like your zoom?

I have yet to find any 4, 5, or 6mm eyepiece I liked
(but I haven't tried many)

the celestron plossls made very good map/ star chart holders though

Southmike, can I go even lower ( in mm)?

My main goal is to achieve enough magnitude (over 300x) to see the Planets in full view.

I know that over 300x the image is most of the time degraded but I think with an 6mm ortho like the one from Baader will give a clean and bright image...

As for the Plossl I tell you what guys....

I have the Skywatcher SuperPlossl's 10mm and 25mm with FOV ~52o and price about 30 euros, here in Greece.

I tell you that these cheap EP's have a very nice and grispy image. They are also multicoated and very capable...

My main question now is if the 6mm will deserve its price (~67 euros).

Joad the price here in Greece for the 7mm ortho is unfortunately ~99 euros.

So, 6mm is my "bargain" option....

Guys, I just bought a Baader Ortho 6mm for pure planetary amusement.

Due to its sharp views I think I will be very happy finally with this buy.

Now, a problem came (as usual).....!

I made a RS232 cable for my LX200 but the funny thing is that nothing works.

Me and a friend sat down and made all the connections as shown in the manual. Telescope was ready, up and ready.

I loaded Astroplanner, no connection.

I loaded then TheSky v6. The same thing.

Finally I install ASCOM Drivers for Cartes Du Ciel program but still no connection.

I checked the connection (COM1 / COM2) nothing wrong.

My only thinking is as the following picture shows to invert the anti-symmetrically the telephone jacks in order not to be symmetrically on the wires...

Any ideas whatsoever?

Guys, hi!

After a week I now tried with a new 4 pin cable and again no luck.

I loaded Astroplanner, no connection.

I loaded then TheSky v6. The same thing.

Also Cartes Du Ciel program but still no connection.

Is there maybe the test program (from Meade) in .bas file?

I don't to write all this basic commands (back in the '80's!!!)

Any ideas?

PS: Next check will be the serial connector itself (DB-9)....
