The ONLY reasons I can think of for a smaller scope being better than a larger one under light polluted skies would be:
1: Poor light shielding around the eyepiece on the larger scope. Many larger scopes are truss tubes while most smaller ones are solid tubes. If you don't have a shroud around the truss tube stray light might reduce contrast making the smaller scope look better.
2: If the smaller scope has better optics than the larger it will do better. Must not compare 'apples with oranges'.
