Looking to get my feet wet.... new
      #2426772 - 05/29/08 12:52 PM

What can you tell me about this camera ? Or would you recommend something else in this price range? Is it better to get a color or monochrome camera? can the frames be captured and stacked to create images?
thanks for you help

What kind of imaging do you want to do?

Solar system objects
DSO
- extended objects (nebulae/clusters)
- galaxies
- globular clusters
- planetary nebulae
Live view DSO

Through which of your scopes?

The MFG page says the frames can be captured.

My impression is that these high-frame rate cameras are best for planetary (bright small things) imaging where the frame rate allows capturing the good seeing moments and filtering out the bad. If that is what you want to do, it will probably work. There are a number of other choices for planetary imaging, such as those offered by Orion and web-cams.

More helpful answers are probably contingent on what your answers are to the questions posed by mclewis1.

Marc
I guess I'm thinking about imaging a little of everything. For starters I'd hook it up to one of the newts and put it on the CG5 mount. Then maybe a little Dob work with a monitor to impress people
For planetary work I'd use the c6. I am attracted to the relatively low entry price of these things.

Matty, you may be better getting advice in the astrophotography section. Imaging source cameras are world class imaging devices used by the very best planetary astrophotogtaphers (and some not so good ones too !)

The sort of camera we use here are more suited to real(ish) time, in the field work rather than imaging. In particular, all the cameras here can be used without the need for a computer - i.e AV out. You can image, and I've had some nice results with mine, but something as simple as a meade DSI II will blow them out of the water in that regard.

But give us a dark sky and a tv monitor, and we will win every time for instant gratification!!!

Yes, these are great planetary cameras, but if you're going for DSOs in real time to impress freinds, you might end up getting the golf clap. For planetary imaging they can't be beat.

If I were you, I'd just go over to the planetary forum, and ask your question there.

I just picked up the Philips 900 webcam from local computer supply store (NCIX) and the nice CNC nose-piece adapter from "Modern Photonics" -- total price $130.00. Haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it seems to be a rig lots of people are having success with.

Are any of these Video-Camera's suitable for DSO's? As far as the Imaging Source camera goes, it uses a fire-wire connection, so I don't think its meant for a moniter, but rather a PC or laptop. I guess I should have phrased my original post better.
Has anyone used the DFK 21AF04AS and what were your results.

You can use these cameras for DSOs, but you'd be better off with a DSI II. It will blow the socks off of the DMK on DSOs. The DMK is meant for high frame rate capture, and not really for long exposure. For DSOs on a monitor, you can't beat the MallinCam hands down!

By the way the camera of choice for planetary is this...

Lester uses one here: http://southcelestialpole.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,8042.0.html

This URl may work better: http://tinyurl.com/5svnwd

Not too bad ...

And the Mallincam can record direct to a DVD recorder...then the track converted to .avi, then separated by frame (I'm told).

thats great stuff Rusty,
Thanks for the advice everyone.

I think what I will end up doing is getting one of the less expensive models for use at star parties and get togethers. I'll hook it up to an old moniter or TV and worry about serious imaging at a later date.
