Kaguya orbiter Apollo lander Moon images
      #2433736 - 06/01/08 05:48 PM

Hey guys,

Seeing the images of the Phoenix on the surface taken by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter made me wonder.

The Japanese have placed the Kaguya orbiter around our Moon. Having an orbit of around 100km and equipped with high resolution imagers, has the Kaguya ever taken images of any of the Apollo landing sites. Specifically showing the lander, rover tracks, etc? Just curious.

Note: I am not a conspiracy buff and this has nothing to do with wether the Moon landings happened or not. Pease don't take this thread in the wrong direction.

Thanks.

I don't think Selene (nicknamed Kaguya) has the resolving power to image the human artifacts. The wikipedia article says that it has 20-10 m per pixel resolution, or about 1/50th the resolution of the HIRISE camera that's been used to image landers and rovers on Mars.

Attached is an image (lifted from Google Maps) of some of the San Jose Area at roughly 10 m per pixel. As you can see, it is quite difficult to resolve anything smaller than freeways or large buildings. Even San Jose International Airport looks quite small. I think it would be extremely hard to find something as small as a lunar lander on such an image. It would be nothing more than small variation in color for a single pixel.

The good news is that Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will have a very high resolution camera with .5 m/pixel resolution.

Thanks alot for the info. I guess we'll have to wait until higher resolution.
