Who will be the first to spot the June New Moon with naked eyes after sunset? The Dark Moon will be in geocentric longitudinal conjunction with the Sun on 2008 JUN 03 at 19:23 UT (14:23 CDT). The first opportunity for North Americans to sight it will occur during the evening of June 4 while aged about 30 hours.
I’ve created a graphic previewing the western sky as viewed from Chicagoland 25 minutes after sunset on June 4, although it should well serve most North Americans. It can be seen by clicking: http://www.curtrenz.com/astronomical.html
Photos or descriptions of the June New Moon would be welcome additions to this thread. Please include the date, time, time zone and location. Good Luck!
Below is a photo I took on 2007 JUL 15 of the Moon aged 38:05 hrs.

I saw the new moon at 7:45 MST. I'm not too sure what time that would be for UT. I'm sure someone out there can beat that.

Well done, Typhus. That would have been 02:45 UT with the Moon aged 31:22 hrs.
Summertime scud clouds were sweeping across the western sky this evening as seen from Arlington Heights, Illinois. Momentarily the veil got thin enough for me to get the shot seen below. It was taken on 2008 JUN 04 at 21:02 CDT when the Moon was aged 30:39 hrs. That was 38 minutes after sunset and 60 minutes before moonset.

Beautiful pic, Curt! The Moon looks so fragile and gentle and that wonderfully deepening blue on the sky is something really impressive in delivering the mood on the occasion!
Thanks for sharing!
Be well!

Thanks Timo, Carol and Tommy. Let’s hope the weather gods become more accommodating to everyone over the next couple of days. This is the final springtime (pre-summer solstice) window this year for ideal viewing of the waxing crescent Moon.
We may be able to see The Old Moon in the New Moon’s Arms during the next couple of evenings (great photo ops!) Tomorrow evening (June 6) the Moon will be aged three days when it is traditionally called Diana’s Bow (as in the piece of archery equipment). That’s a time when many consider the Moon’s shape to be the most esthetically pleasing. Diana was the ancient Roman goddess of hunting and the Moon; the crescent was thought to represent the bow for her arrow.

Hi all,
have to share this with you...
tonight, almost an hour ago, we were walking with my wife as I suddenly spotted the very, very gentle tiny moon on the very light sky.
Jim's Lunar Terminator Visualization Tool tells me that form my location, the Sun was 3.3 degrees high at an azimuth of 314.2 degrees, and the Moon was 21.6 degrees high at 275.8 degrees azimuth. Moon's angular diameter was 1967.6 arc seconds, and 12.59 perc cent was illuminated (at a colongitude of 305.973). The time was 19.01 UT and the date 6th of June 2008...
Well, there it was... and as we all know, the best camera is the one with you! So I took a photo with my Nokia E90 Communicator's camera...
Attached it is in all it's tiny beauty - processed negative, so one can barely see the thing on the left side of the pic, just beside a cloud... like the cloud is about to digest the poor newcomer!
Be well all!
