New William Optics 88mm scopes with a retracted length of 15.6 inches this may be the perfect portable refractor. Not to mention the focal length of 498mm f/5.6 I really want one too bad I just purchased a used WO80mm.
The site says they are 80mm in the specs but the f-ratio works out with 88mm so I'm going to assume that was a typo.

I have to wonder how the optics will stack up with the M90 FD and the previous M & ZS 80mm FD offerings?
I also wonder if the focuser will be M80 like or the nicer M90?
It looks like the L-bracket mounting shoe is removable... I do like that.

Well I have placed a few items for sale at that other site.So if I can get them to sale I will be purchasing the 88mm.
If I dont sell my items I will have to wait about 2 weeks, and then hope there are some still available.

Or you could always wait for one to pop onto the used market. A few 72's found there way there I'm sure the 88 will do the same. And yes I agree the product lines are getting very confusing.

Todd, OPer and all,
My first post on CN. I'm confused, too. I recently ordered a WO 90mm that's expected at the store (C-7 in MD/DC area) sometime this month. (I'll be using it w/a Vixen PortaMount.) C-7 cleans, recollimates as necessary and star tests all scopes they sell before delivery. If it doesn't meet C-7's specs, they send it back and order another copy. Amazing! Worth every penny of full price vs. any on-line outlets. Do any other retail outlets do this?
Now to my confusion re: specs of new WO 88 (from OP's URL reference) and the 90 (specs from WO product sheet C-7 gave me):
Retracted tube length: 88 = 15.6" @F/5.6; 90 = 14.2" @F/6.9. Also weight of tube: 88 = 7.5#; 90 = 6.8#.
What am I missing? A faster FR tube (F/5.6) longer and heavier than a slower, slightly larger aperture FR tube (F/6.9)?
I'm very curious as to your understanding of, what seems to me, this discrepancy. It doesn't seem that the 88 is a triplet, which could account for the difference. Am I wrong?
Thanks all, Rod (the "Oldbie")

Hi Rod,I Would Like To Wish You A Very Warm Welcome To Cloudy Nights.
I am as confused as you are in the specs and relationship of the Megrez90 and the Megrez88.It is almost as confusing as the WO Megrez72 and the soon to be released Zenith Star 70.
I feel these issues wont be solved or understood until the new scopes are finally in the hands of the Observers. So,as of now,I just plan on waiting and see exactally what we have in this 88mm refractor.
And Once Again,May I add A Heart Felt Welcome.

With that aperture and focal length, it sure seems like they're trying to market a scope very similar to the Takahashi Sky90.
The $899 price point makes it very attractive.

Thanks Todd for your warm welcome. Seems like lots of people on this forum are kind and respectful, unlike some other forums I've seen.
Re: the WO 88 vs. 90. Does it have the same glass (FPL-53) as the 90? If so, it looks like the only significant difference is the slightly faster F/R. It must be enough reason for a manufacturer to make two very close cousins. Again, unless there are other factors. Anyway, I'll be curious to see how this shakes out.
Re: my choice to buy the WO90. I'd never heard of WO when I first started my research a couple months ago - shows you how far out of this game I was. Then, I saw the 90 in person at the store (C-7) - all white with the gold trim, and I was hooked. Especially when the salesman (they don't call themselves that at this store; they're technicians, and, very knowledgeable, I might add) said it's every bit as good as the TV 85 and much cheaper (1200/near 2100 before 10% rebate), and with a better focuser and a little lighter in weight, and I thought, better looking, too. So there you have it. Simple purchase, for a change.

I'm somewhat confused looking at the recent Megrez 72mm vs the soon to be released Zenithstar 70mm. These two scopes are very similer physically......beautiful little scopes, no doubt. Why the big price difference between the two ?????
I saw on one website that is advertising the upcoming Zenithstar 70 as having fpl53 glass ??????? Can that really be considering that the scope is going to sell for under $500.00 ?
I plan to soon purchase a very small ed scope around this size to mount on my telepod and the new ZS70 looks pretty good.
I know this is beating a dead horse, but I personally would like to know for sure exactly what kind of glass that I am paying for.
One thing that I know for sure.....the white and gold colors on the William Optics scopes are a beautiful color combination.

I'm not sure what the glass is but my 72FD colour correction is as good as my TV85 and I don't think that's fpl 51. The new WO 88 is supposed to use the same glass as the 72.The focuser on the new 88 is the same as on the 72 which is super smooth. If I didn't have the TV85 I would have gone for the new WO 88.

The 88 is most likely using FPL53.

WO90 - FPL 53 glass F6.9 not as fast but still good for AP Little better quality focuser & knobs Triplet - 3 lens - better color correction
Just my guess.
The Megrez 90 is a FPL53 doublet.

Hi, Clive, Tom,
That's right, I did sell the Traveler (and the AP 130mm) when I moved from a house in a country-type setting (exurb of DC), where the milky way was visible, to a city apartment. I should have been more clear about that. I then got into other things and receded to "armchair" status for many years. Now I'm getting back, as I said, to a quick G&G for an occasional peek, when I get the energy to "shlep" the thing outside somewhere near my building. Mostly moon and planets and a few of the brightest clusters - the only objects visible from my extreme LP location (Chevy Chase, straddling NW DC). I'm not ready (yet?) to join a club and drive miles to their dark site -- alas, I'm not much of a joiner. And anyway, by 10-11pm, I'm ready to hit the sack.
So there you have a (very) truncated little bio.
Regards, Rod
