Jim

I've already written 14-15 July 2009 into my calendar, now I just have to convince my wife that that would be a good time for us to take a holiday to the desert so that I am pretty much guaranteed good weather I note that later this lunation there will be another good opportunity to see Mare Orientale under high sun, not quite as good as last month but still worth getting up before dawn for.

Timo

I've written to Tom to re the concept of fair use in copyright, hopefully the comparison image I created at least will be restored.

Jim,
Thanks for clarifying the difference between geocentric and topocentric libration calculations--I learned something.

Stephen,
Hill's drawing compared *very* favorably to your image--right down to the bright areas (which Hill outlines with dashed lines). I know that you posted that comparison in order to recognise and honor Hill's skill as an observer and artist. *But*, I also know that CN regulates the use of copyrighted material very carefully in order to safeguard the rights of all of us who post images and sketches on the Web--that is why I provided the hyperlink to the material instead of posting it directly. I was not surprised to see that your post was edited.

I understand that you had the best intentions and I hope that something amenable can be worked out--perhaps permission from the copyright owner can be obtained. I would like for Harold Hill's work to be as widely seen as possible, but I must say that I support CN's policy.

Michael

As explained to me it has nothing to do with copyright but is simply a blanket ban by CN on any use whatsoever of images hosted elsewhere on the net, whether subject to copyright or not. The fact that the comparison image I created would not be a breach of copyright (fair use exception) and that I have fully acknowledged the author is irrelevant.

regards

Stephen

PS: on reading the TOS I note that posting of "NASA/NOAA images and the images of other government agencies" is permitted under certain conditions.
