I saw batteries at walgreens for $10.00 for 32 double AA batteries so i thought this was an excellent deal for batteries for my little etx 60 . I placed the first set of six in the battery pack and after about one hour observing i heard a loud pop. i opened the battery case and it one had exploded. two nites latter i put the second set in and once again after one hour another loud pop- two exploded batteries- i was very fortunate that non of the acid leaked down in to the drive board. put duracell in and everything fine after 3 hours last nite of observing- i am only posting this to help anyone else from having a serious problem with the bargin batteries- clear skies to all rocco

Could you tell us what brand? It will give us a better idea of who to avoid.

Were they alkaline or carbon-zinc? The later doesn't like high current and will get hot.

The AC power supply is highly advised for the etx-60, I do keep the battery pack filled with fresh Duracells though.

The batteries were called ultra alkaline supercell sold under walgreens name- came in pack of thirty two- i agree thepower supply is the way to go but i take this little scope to a relatively dark site off of a bike path so i rely quite a bit on the battery power- clear skies to all rocco

We've used many alkaline batteries under the Walgreen name and not had any problems. However, our use was not in telescopes but in lower current applications. I would try to return them for refund or replacement as I believe they are defective based on your description of the failure mode.

What I think happened --- also happened to me once--- you put the battery in backwards-- I had this happen once with Eveready Alkaline batteries..... it exploded. I now use an external power source.
