Use of electronic Zoom
      #2460656 - 06/14/08 09:25 PM

If you have electronic zoom (typical on MallinCAM or StellaCAM) -- do not underestimate its value to assist in observing. I have done many sketches with a zoom, a Barlow, or the combination thereof. By far, the easiest change to make (to change magnification or seek out detail) is by using the electronic zoom feature. There are several reasons: (1) no changes are necessary in the physical setup so the time to make change is just a few button pushes; (2) the pixel "density" of the image is already so good that using optical multipliers (a Barlow) does not (to the eyes) help very much if the monitor is already decent; and (3) the zoom can be varied anywhere from 1 to 2X to optimize the scene very easily. A link (below) shows a sketch to Plato where there is a link (after a short paragraph) to the sketch to show an example. The Barlow of the same scene introduced some "ghosting". But using the straight nosepiece or a focal reducer is first to find the scene you want is best....then change the FOV or magnification by using the Zoom feature. Believe me...it's faster, it gives you lots of magnification that conditions might tolerate, and the loss of detail is not normally perceptible on the monitor.

I'd like to mention that if the display monitor is a high-quality large screen monitor, by viewing a selected area, the quality will be better than electronic zoom blown to the full screen.

Also note that electronic zoom should not go beyond a high magnification factor. I would say 3x probably is the limit.

Right you are. The zoom on the older Stella CAM and the current MallinCAMs that I have always go to a maximum of 2x, so overpowering zoom feature (beyond the practical physical limits of the ability of the telescope for a reasonable image) is not possible. Zoom between 1 and 2x (like typical 2x Barlows) is a reasonable digital extension that does not introduce a lot of error but still has the neat feature of being highly/quickly variable. I would be interested to know if any of the other video cameras have electronic zoom beyond 2x. If they do, most things beyond 2 and certainly 3X are probably superfluous because we are then talking about 2-4 mm Plossl equivalency, which is rarely usable optically on most scopes unless things are really really ideal.
