Hi All,
I'm going to St. Thomas next Saturday 06/28. I'll be taking my 11x70 Oberwerk's. So I need some objects to look at. I should be able to see the Omega Cluster no problem but I was wondering what else I should look out for?

Looking up the weather for zip code 00801, looks like it will be scattered showers. I hope you will have fine openings to see! May the forcasters be wrong! I would take a binocular with a smaller objective as well. You are a more experienced observer than I!

Rob: Thanks for the weather check. I also read that the skeeters there are BAD! My wife complained. I told her I don't care if it pours all week we WON'T be in NJ! That's enough for me!
I wouldn't say I'm a more exp observer. I don't use the binos that much. Don't have any binos with smaller objectives. Why would I want smaller objectives?

Smaller objectives: I was thinking about holding up the three pound binoculars and how that might be tiring. That would cause me to stop stargazing before approaching an hour. With a lighter one, like a 11x56 [48mm actual] Obies or Nikon Extreme 10x50, both 2 pounds and 4 ounces might let me to hunt around in the night sky. I have laid down on the cement, and held up the Obies to my eyes and looked for a couple of hours. Yes, the mosquitos have started to bother me there. That also causes me to quit the stargazing. I have tried to spray Deet on me. (It worries me that I might get the glass marked with the deet) I think you will also have the moon a week past full. The smaller objective, smaller exit pupil, will also keep the moon shine slightly minimized. I have enjoyed that 3 pound binoculars with the 15x eyepieces. I know the more experienced around here see much deeper when they are mounted. Even though I show myself not as committed, I like to hand hold the 15x for less than an hour periods. Just surfing around the stars, finding DSO's is so much fun! Sometimes I study a couple of constellations to find what is there and look for them!

Thanks for the reply. I'm also taking my tripod & adapter so the weight won't be a problem.
I am worried about the mosquitos also. I have read a couple reviews of the place we are staying & they have one thing in common. All talked about how bad the mosquitos were. Taking bug spray with us so I'm thinking they won't be too much of a problem. Either way I don't plan to do a lot of viewing. Maybe a couple of nights. Just taking the binos because I have the extra room in the suitcases. Got a lot planned for the trip but thought it would be cool to do some viewing on those nights we are in.

Worry about sand fleas also. I've been eaten alive on the legs while observing from the beach in Mexico.
In Costa Rica I tucked light pants into socks and all went well.

SkyG: Thanks. I'm a lot like he was in the show. A lot shraper & more on top of things then I look.
Bill: I'm going to have long pants. I also have 100% DEET spray. Hard to find it now but it works REALLY well. Just worried how my offspring will look.
