...that meets the following conditions!
1) Is a southern-hemisphere one. I am going to Chile in a few weeks so this is what it will be mainly used for. If it also has a northern-hemisphere side then that is fine, but I'm not fussed.
2) Not too big or expensive - must fit in a rucksack!
3) Durable/waterproof.
4) Includes some of the brighter objects of the night sky. The skies should be spectacular - we're in the desert 
5) Available in the UK.

I use guide to the stars by David levy. There are 2 different sizes. Mine is the larger one that is about the size of a large dinner plate.

Thanks! I did some of my own searching too, and I found the Philips Planisphere - does anyone have any experience with this one?

Peter - Go to "SkyMaps.com" There you can download or print out monthly planisphere maps for the current months. They are free and the site has a version for the southern hemisphere.
Each can be put inside a plastic sheet protector (8x11 pages) to protect them from the moisture. They will fill all your posted needs very nicely.

I do not have any experience with that one but it looks similar to what I use. I do believe that there are ones made for the southern hemisphere but you would have to specify that. The one I suggested is northern hemisphere sorry. Look up an astronomy shop in Australia. Or contact a user named vinnie on this site. He is a good guy, I would be willing to bet that he could help you. The one I suggested has information the back side. One that you could fip between hemispheres would be a great idea though. Do you have any astronomy shops nearby?

panhard - Unfortunately I don't have any astronomy shops near me - they are pretty thinly spread in the UK. A double sided one would be cool, but I haven't seen any yet in my searches. I'll contact vinnie like you suggest
