Best Binoviewer setup for a Meade LX200R 10"
      #2484083 - 06/26/08 09:45 AM

Hi,
I have been scouting around looking to get the best setup for a Binoviewer & my LX200R 10".

From what I read, it seems the best way of viewing through my scope.

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Simon (UK)

Hi Simon-
Weclome to CN from the other side of the pond!

Not sure how those new LX2000Rs work, but for my regular ol' SCT i found the Denkmeier BVer with dual 'Power-X-Switch' to be an extremely enjoyable set-up! Many nights only one pair of EPs would get used- the THREE different focal-length settings the PxS provided was plenty to keep me happily viewing: Wide, medium-field, & close-up!

If i were to start again, i think i'd look closely at their PxS DIAGONAL, as it would give the THREE FL settings for use with solo EPs, as well as the BVer. Plus, with said diagonal, even a less-expensive "starter" BV set-up could be used- as a prelude to moving "up" to a "premium" BVer.

I think Siebert Optics also makes such a diagonal, too- altho not sure of their pricing and/or availability timeframes.

Cheers,
mike b

Hi Simon

I use a R2 (PxS diagonal for refractors) / Denk II / 24 Pans with my LX200/12. IMO, the R2 produces a bit too much magnification but the S1 or S2 would be perfect.

Come to think of it, as soon as it clears I'll see whether an f/6.3 reducer can be used in front of the R2... that might work too...

Hi and thanks for your comments ad suggestions!

I am currently looking a the Televue Binoviewer. It little more than I would like to pay but the reviews seem to be very good with good quality optics.

What would be the best eyepice to start with, a 15mm or less?

Regards,
Simon

The TV BVer is certainly top-drawer stuff! Seems like it'd be hard to go wrong there...

For EPs, a lot depends on wether you're planning on going with a PxS diagonal. But i'd *guess* that 15mm might be the shortest FL to consider, as these scopes have a tonne of FL to work with, & you want to keep the magnifications realistic! Adding a diagonal to them (is there another way to view without supporting your favorite chiropractor?) also *increases* the FL, too- for my old F10 SCT, it was clocking at ~F11.2 with a diagonal in place! Adding a PxS magnifier to that got the effective F-ratio up nearer F30!

As a result, some of my MOST used EP pairs were 24mm Pans & 17mm Siebert 'Ultras'. I also had 14mm Pentax XLs, but they saw a bit less use due to the high-end mags in the 550x range!

If you decide to go the PxS diagonal route, i'd look at the mag-range it'll produce in your specific scope & plan the higher-end EP acquisitions accordingly. At the longer end, the 24mm Pans & several others of similar FL/AFoV design would make good choices.
