just the basics.. inspect for obvious damage ,broken glass dents etc..

make sure the unit powers on , kep pad lights up,
and moves when you tel it too.
also make sure when you turn it on it doesn't spin etc..

other then that don't throw your back out lifting it.
read the manual, and enjoy a solid performer..
sound like a nice scope..i really liked my 10"

You used to be able to get a 12" classic with some accessories for around $2000 on astromart, I guess prices for the classics have been going up so depending on what comes with it, it is a fair deal.

If you want to be über-thorough, inspect the bottom of the base for dents around the mounting hole. Then remove the bottom plate and inspect for swollen capacitors. Check the electrical connections for the declination cord, both on the front of the arm where you connect the cord to the front panel, and on the inside of the arm where the cord goes up to the dec motor assy. Pull the cover off the dec housing and inspect the worm and worm gear for debris, gunk, etc. Power up the scope and, using the keypad, rotate the RA 360° and the dec 180° while listening for ugly sounds. (Well, uglier than usual.) Grasp the secondary housing on the front of the corrector and try moving it. The housing shouldn't move in the corrector, and the corrector shouldn't move in the tube. If the scope doesn't already have a set of Bob's Knobs installed, look closely for scratches on the corrector where a screwdriver or allen wrench may have slipped. Run the focuser through its range of motion while feeling for binding and excessive backlash. Remove everything from the rear of the scope--eyepiece holder/visual back and rear cell. Nothing should be binding up there either. If you don't already know how, have the seller demonstrate a two-star alt-az alignment.

Enjoy your Classic--I love mine!

well you can check that stuff after you buy it..
ain't nobody dis-assembling my scope before they pay..lol
I haven't even gone that far.

but all good things to check..

actually you would be surprised how much damage has to occur before viewing is impaired ..
I once saw a badly dented, dust ridden scope with a big ol scratched corector plate..eeee gads was a poor scope, but image viewing wise you would never know it.

I think the owner said he got it free from a neighbor that dropped it moving. gives me nightmares thinking about it.

I paid the same for mine last year ( 20mm type II Nagler came with it ) It works or it doesn't...turn it on and see what happens. When you turn it on the hand pendant will say 'meade' for about 20 seconds, it should then display the vir.3. something, then 'site - align'. When you turn it on and all you ever see is 'meade', do not buy it.

Could you get one of those Starizona things and just use it for AP?
