You know... there's actually a song called "Astronomy", might be worth a listen?
It's by a rock group from the 70's (the amazing Blue Oyster Cult)... thought some of you might like to hear the one and only song called Astronomy!..it's the live version and sounds pretty good. I think it does our hobby justice.
Peace.

If I recall correctly, Eric Bloom (the guy who sings) hated performing this song live. Metallica covered this song a few years back as well..
For a long time I have suspected someone in B.O.C knew more about astronomy than the average person (an amateur, perhaps?). Check out "Workshop of the Telescopes",too if you can track it down...
Pink Floyd's "Astronomy Domine" is another good choice; it's less ambiguous than B.O.C's offering and is REALLY about astronomy...

For another BOC treat (though non-astronomical),check out the video for their "Veteran of the Psychic Wars". It's a great song with a killer guitar solo. It's in the related videos section, but if you are interested, here is the link.

I have got the Metallica version. It's on their 'Garage Days' CD (full of cover versions, some good some awful, it has to be said!).
Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd was covered by the Canadian band Voivod a few years ago, and I confess I like the Voivod version better than the original.

Yeah..I forgot about Pink Floyds astronomy song, got to love the Floyd. I know that for me I always prefered Eric Blooms singing on this song, Buck is good but Eric really sounded great live. Plus EB is the main astronomy buff of the bunch, he has a website devoted to ET life out in space somewhere. Actually there might be alot more songs about astronomy/space if we think about....like, Space Trucking (deep purple) Space Cowboy (steve miller) to name a few.

Okay, just a follow up on this subject. I remember back in 1997 I was observing Mars with my C8, this was the very night that our Mars spacecraft (the name excapes me?) was landing on Mars. Anyway, I had the radio on in the truck and there was a cool song playing called Marching To Mars, by Sammy Hagar, I'm not a big fan of Hagar's but he really surprised me with this song.
[Edited to remove lyrics per TOS, sorry. I'm sure they can be found online. --Steph/mod]
I do remember besides the lyris the song had a catchy and rocking sound to it. Anyway...the song has gone away but it sure made the trip to Mars that night alot more memorible.
I sure wish more bands would write songs about something important like lading o another world.

Good PF cover by Voivod- never head that before.
It's a very faithful cover of the version PF played when Gilmour joined the group (practically note for note). Their music turned pretty dark then. Check out the live version on Ummagumma. Probably the best version out there.

I don't think Steve Miller's "Space Cowboy" had anything to do with astronomy!

Well, I suppose the Joker could be observing at midnight while toking on a fine cigar.....;)
Here is something that I won't be surprised to learn has been posted before, but since we are now talking loosely-themed astronomical music, this is a wonderful presentation of an old favourite. Have you ever seen this visualization of Vincent?
