altazimuth mount with binoculars
      #2487914 - 06/28/08 12:12 PM

Not sure if this belongs here or in the mount forum, so my apologies.

I wanted to know if one can use binoculars on an altazimuth mount. I am planning on getting the AT Voyager mount for a small scope, but I would also like to know if I can use my binoculars with it (Garret 10x50). The Voyager accepts vixen dovetails. I looked into the Vixen website and they have some equipment to attach binoculars to the portamount...but it is close to $100. It is a bit more money than I want to spend. I appreciate any suggestions on other things that I could use. Also, your impressions on the ease of use of an alt mount with binoculars.

Alex,

I'd think you'dfind it too awkward to get the height range needed for standing, and even adjusting for looking low in elevation vs high up overhead if seated. For a 10x50, I'd just get a nice chair and if I wanted some stability for looking at things just use a monopod or inexpensive camera tripod.

Alex,
I have the Voyager mount and it's excellent for scopes. I have received my Garrett 15x70's and looked to mounting them on the Voyager. Not going to happen, too much messing around and a little awkward to use with the mount. Just my thoughts on this. Apologies if it burst your bubble. Don't let it stop you though if you want a go at it. What do I know

Thank you guys. I will start saving my pennies and buy a camera tripod and one of those joystick mounts. I have to come to appreciate my binoculars a lot. I may eventually purchase the 15X70s too.
