Howdy, Does anyone have any experience with the Gemini 12x60 LW? I'm thinking about buying one; it appears to be a good deal at $110, and I've read that Garrett has a good return policy if there's a problem. Good seeing, Davey

Hi Davey,
I have the 12x60s from Garrett, and find them to be a very nice pair (in fact they are my most used)
They perform very well, give very nice wide views(5.3*, and smaller than the advertised 5.7*) , good eye relief, no problems with getting off collimation so far.
If you have decided on a 12x60, then these are a very good choice. If you are thinking alnng lines of a range of mag/aperture then note that these will require a mount of some sort. Weight wise, they can ofcourse be handheld, but the mag (for me) is too high too hold stars steady. 8x and 42 or 50 aperture is perhaps more comfortable for hand held use.
If you have a good monopod/tripod, and are looking for 12x and 60 aperture, I wholeheartedly recommend them.
Good luck
Clear skies,
Kumar

I have a pair of 12x60's. I can hand hold them for sweeping the sky. But to show details, craters on the moon, etc. Then, they need to be tripod mounted.

I appreciate your responses eklf and jrw11. From what I've read about GO's binocs, they are a good value and perform well for their cost. I primarily intend to use the 12x60 LW handheld for searching for dso's and binary stars; I do have a couple of good tripods for steady viewing, and I'll also try using a lawn chair. I wanted to get a binoc with a higher mag than my Pentax 8x40 PCF WP, and of course with more aperture too. I considered the Gemini 11x56 LW for $100, but the 12x60 LW is only $10 more for more aperture and not much more weight, so it seems like the best bang for the buck, and the 12x will come in handy for splitting a few binaries. Thanks again, good seeing, Davey

FWIW, Garrett Optical, like most other companies, offers several different quality level of binoculars, what I would call beginners level, moderate quality and good quality. For the most part, the quality levels are commensurate with price. Good value, and for the price, you may get a slightly higher mag and aperture than your Pentax, but not the same quality.
