Garrett Gemini 12x60 LW new
      #2488451 - 06/28/08 06:18 PM

Howdy,
Does anyone have any experience with the Gemini 12x60 LW? I'm thinking about buying one; it appears to be a good deal at $110, and I've read that Garrett has a good return policy if there's a problem.
Good seeing,
Davey

Hi Davey,

I have the 12x60s from Garrett, and find them to be a very nice pair (in fact they are my most used)

They perform very well, give very nice wide views(5.3*, and smaller than the advertised 5.7*) , good eye relief, no problems with getting off collimation so far.

If you have decided on a 12x60, then these are a very good choice. If you are thinking alnng lines of a range of mag/aperture then note that these will require a mount of some sort. Weight wise, they can ofcourse be handheld, but the mag (for me) is too high too hold stars steady. 8x and 42 or 50 aperture is perhaps more comfortable for hand held use.

If you have a good monopod/tripod, and are looking for 12x and 60 aperture, I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Good luck
Clear skies,
Kumar

I have a pair of 12x60's. I can hand hold them for sweeping the sky. But to show details, craters on the moon, etc. Then, they need to be tripod mounted.

I appreciate your responses eklf and jrw11. From what I've read about GO's binocs, they are a good value and perform well for their cost. I primarily intend to use the 12x60 LW handheld for searching for dso's and binary stars; I do have a couple of good tripods for steady viewing, and I'll also try using a lawn chair.
I wanted to get a binoc with a higher mag than my Pentax 8x40 PCF WP, and of course with more aperture too. I considered the Gemini 11x56 LW for $100, but the 12x60 LW is only $10 more for more aperture and not much more weight, so it seems like the best bang for the buck, and the 12x will come in handy for splitting a few binaries.
Thanks again, good seeing,
Davey

FWIW, Garrett Optical, like most other companies, offers several different quality level of binoculars, what I would call beginners level, moderate quality and good quality. For the most part, the quality levels are commensurate with price. Good value, and for the price, you may get a slightly higher mag and aperture than your Pentax, but not the same quality.

I'm also looking for a better quality 12 to 16 x 60 mm binocular. Pentax stopped making these sizes. I came across the orion 15x63 mini giant binoculars for 220.00. At twice the price of the GO's are these considerably better? Any other importers that make these sizes in the 2 to 300 dollar range. Do you know who else puts their name on the mini Giants 15x63 models?

The Pentax 16x60mm PCF WP can still be found, for sale, on the internet, by doing a google search. Since they are discontinued they can be somewhat overpriced.

Pentax 16x60 PCF WP

Last year Sportsman's Warehouse was still selling the Pentax 16x60mm, if you live close to one you might have them check their stores to see if any remain in their inventory.

thanks for info, would you know how the Pentax compares to the Orion 15x63 mini giants? They both sell for around the same price.

I have viewed through the Pentax PCF WP 16x60 and, frankly, I find the 2.8* and 45* FOVs very restrictive and uncomfortable--tunnel vision. I have no experience with the Orion Mini, but I note that the FOVs are larger. I also think the discontinued Pentax come with the older limited warranty, while the Mini has a 5 year warranty and is made in Japan.

There is nothing wrong with the so-called "older limited warranty", Pentax will cover the binocular FOR AS LONG AS it is owned by the original owner.

Here is a link for the Orion Mini Giant 15x63mm: click here Excellent pricing for their LABOR DAY SALE.

Not too far from the Bodie Island Lighthouse. I like to go there at night (but the mosquitoes are murder). This is a great place for birding.

Take vitamin B1 or Garlic tablets for mosquitoes.

I like my 15x70mm or 16x60mm for close-in birding, around 50' or so.

Stan , I was given the same advice a few years ago when on holiday in Greece .

I placed a saucerful of each on a wall about twenty feet from where I was lying poolside , but I don't think the Mozzies went anywhere near them ! :-)

Welllll, I did order the Orion 15x63's and I'm very happy with them. Thanks again for the link. I wish I could give a sophisticated first light impression but I'm not that knowledgeable. This is the first pair of bins that I've bought in almost twenty years. I bought them because after looking through scopes for half a century I had an epiphany this past August. Wifey and I woke up in the wee hours, as we've always done every year to look at the Persieds meteor shower. However, this time is was pretty humble viewing through our 4.0 magnitude skies in our back yard. After twenty minutes we had only seen about 3 shooting stars so, wifey gets up and goes in the house to get my Bausch and Lomb 10x40 binoculars and just started looking at the stars. She seemed pretty happy doing so and was impressed with the pleides and just looking at tons of stars we would not normally see with just our eyes. After a while she got up, handed me the binoculars and and said "stick a fork in me, I'm done" and went to bed. So, I started looking at the stars and it was wonderful, kinda magical, like when I go to a dark area in the country for the first time in a long time. I thought, well, this is great, why don't I get a slightly larger pair so I can see even more. That's just what I did and it's great, so great I'm starting to think I might even want to go bigger but I'm going to play around with these first and learn as much as I can.
I can say that the Orion bins were lighter than I expected. I did appreciate the extra power which was nice as a counter to my old 10x bins but at the same time I got a really good appreciation for how important a wide field of view is and how going over ten power one really needs some kind of mount for terrestrial viewing . However they are light enough to lay down on a reclining chair and just look up at the night sky for quite some time. As for the optics, my first impression were that they were very sharp and colimated. The contrast and brightness was better than my old Baush and Lomb Audubon series which I paid over 200 bucks almost twenty years ago when 200 bucks was a lot of dough. The CA and sharpness were about the same in both binocs. No real obvious color except when you looked at a white bright roof top along the edge. I can live with that. Over and under focus did show nice round circles and that's about as much as I can judge these. I intend to download a CN reports article on judging bins but right now I'm pretty happy with the Orion's and they fit the bill for what I want. Just dying to find out what my next pair will be and how much larger I should go. Wifey loved them so much she actually suggested getting a larger pair........she's such a gem. I'm going to lake Tahoe next week for two nights and excited about seeing what dso's I can see along with saggitarious goodies. Carl
