RCX not responding
      #2490508 - 06/29/08 08:22 PM

Hi all

I'm working with a RCX, and it is frozen... the handcontroller says "downloading" but nothing else happens. Nothing works. What cab I do? Is there any "brutal" reset?

Thanks!!!

Try pressing 999 before it says "Initializing". You can then connect to the Autostar update software and continue the download. It is also recommended that you do a "Garbage Collect".

Were you trying to update the HC, or did this happen by itself. If the former, the 999 trick might work. Otherwise? Likely you will be callin' Meade, I'm afraid.

Thanks for the answers.

No, we just plugged the mount (usb port) through several extensions... also there may be a problem because we had -11ºC that night.
Anyway, thanks to the 999 suggestion we where able to install the firmware again and the mount was recovered. The bad news is that when we tried the usb extensions, again it entered that frozen state. After recovering the mount again (999+...), worked for a limited time very well, and then again was frozen by the same message, this time without any usb plugged at all! The funny thing, is that I tried to power off the mount, connect it to the laptop, and this time it worked flawless while the laptop was connected (no message at all). A few minutes after I unplugged it, it was frozen again.

This problem sounds like a bad connection somewhere. Since it worked flawlessly connected to the laptop, you were likely not touching or jiggling around the hand controller wire, I would look there first.

It is possible the hand controller has a sticky key as well.

Usually cold weather doesn't bother the RCX with the exception that the hand controller display stops working till it is warmed back up.

I would work on the assumption that something is making an intermittent contact somewhere and try and reproduce it by jiggling stuff.

Try getting it working and then walk away. Does the problem crop up when the scope is not being touched or does it only appear when you manipulate the handbox?
