Hi There,
I’ve been hanging around this forum for a while now and really enjoy the advice you all give as I can take most of it (i.e. the simple stuff) on board and use it to improve my binocular viewing.
However I have come across a problem that I presume someone on this forum will have the answer for:
Can someone help me find the appropriate binocular clamp for my 10 x 50 Zeiss jena’s. I recently tried the normal web searches which only turned up this model ( web page ). It’s touted as a universal clamp and although it does fit round the central pivot it can not clamp tight enough. More importantly it’s too thick to allow my binoculars to reach my epd which, as you can imagine is quite annoying.
I have been thinking of taking a punt on the Nikon SE tripod adapter, however this is special order and not that cheap. So I thought I ask the experts!
Any ideas?
Thanks
G

Hey G,
Is this the Nikon adapater you're talking about? http://www.adorama.com/NKBUM.html
Or are you referring to something else?

You're right, those designed to clamp onto the central bar are usually poor for the reason you cite. The Nikon Binoc-U-Mount, OTOH, works pretty well. And it doesn't take a lot of imagination to see that it's easy to build one just like it at home from a couple of blocks of wood covered with some padding and 2 or 3 Velcro straps.
I've seen just that detailed on-line, but couldn't find it just now in a quick search. (I'm sure EdZ will know the link off the top of his head.) You might also check this thread from 2006.
But if it's available cheaply enough. I'd probably just buy the Nikon version and be done with it.

Thanks for the link Phil - I should have searched for a relevent thread in the first place. As the nikon adapter will be returnable I might just order one and check it out!

G, the Nikon 7806 you linked to works great with binoculars that have a 1/2" diameter hinge. It is the preferred adapter for my Nikon and Fujinon Porro binoculars; more rigid than the standard L designs.
The Amazon price seems a bit high; I'm sure I've seen them for around $35 from time to time but prices don't seem to be doing down lately, do they? If it fits it's worth it though.

Best price I can recall for the full metal Nikon center bar adapter is about $48, but it does seem to work very well. I have one older binocular that just won't fit (the bar diameter is too thick to fit), but I have 4 or 5 others that do fit.
A Velcro strap mount I purchased from Eagle Optics is a cheaper than the Nikon Strap mount. However, I'd say it's best use is for small binoculars as the plastic base is not stiff, therefore it wiggles quite a bit. Unfortunately, I can no longer find it listed.

Can you order stuff from Amazon or do you have to use Amazon.UK? the UK price is outrageous.

Thanks EDZ, it's definitely the center bar adapter that I was looking for. The bar on the zeiss is thin (much too thin for the one size fits all plastic thing in the link i gave earlier) so I'm hopeful it will fit.
Les - you're not wrong, the UK price is shocking on most things optical / optically related. I'm buying a new camera for my studio this year (being a photographer) and have calculated that it's cheaper to fly to the states, have a week there, buy the kit and return the UK with considerable change in my pocket!

Thanks Glen, I have had a look at one of those but my as yet unexplained requirement for this attachment is to a monopod and I want the weight to be fairly central.
Thanks

G ,
Sorry I'm late chipping in here , but I use the Nikon central bar clamping adaptor , and it is probably the best thing I ever bought .
It's far better made and much steadier than any L - type arrangement I've used , and fits my Zeiss BGAT as well as it does my Nikon SE .
I paid over the odds for it in the UK , but I'm used to doing that :-)
In this case , it was definitely money well spent .

Thanks Kenny, that's exactly what I hoped to hear. It should do the job nicely on my Zeiss then!
"rip off Britain" raises it's ugly head again!
Hal - thanks for the links but with no screw fitting I definatly need the clamping varity to hold them firm.

G,
Another late response, but I use the "Zeiss Binocular Universal Tripod Adapter" for my Zeiss 15X60's. Holds them rock solid. I'm very pleased with it.
Here is one link:

Here is a pic of the setup:

Lovely set - up , PJ !
Add a second pan - handle to that 501 head and that would probably be close to my all - time favourite higher - power binocular viewing set - up for the daytime ! :-)

Thanks Kenny.
The 501 is an excellent head! I recently purchased a Linhof tripod and head that I am anxious to try. The Linhof is lighter and taller and I'm hoping that will translate into a fine platform for the 15X60's.

Thanks PJ - that does indeed look like a great setup! Love the bins as well. I did have a look at the Zeiss adapter recently when considering a pair of ultravids before zeiss "upgrade" them all to HD's - however in this instance I need a central support as it's for monopod viewing and I couldn't see a way to get the Zeiss set-up centrally aligned.
Thanks for the pic though - it gives me one or two ideas for the future...
