I was voting for zAmbonii I thought he did the best images with the least amount of budget. I personally don't think a beginner starts with a £1500/$3000 SBig, Starlight Express et al.
Thanks for the good words. It is a bit frustrating seeing someone with better equipment, or living in less LP skies beat me out, but I think it comes with the territory. About the only thing I can think of changing in the rules is for the DSLR forum to have a separate modded/unmodded category.
As of right now, I am still new to the astrophotography stuff. I have less than 6 months under my belt, and I am very happy with the results I have gotten with my equipment, and I think it can get even better. My processing is getting better, and I just started to autoguide with a $20 walmart scope and $40 webcam, and was able to get 5 minute subs last night from a $300 scope+mount .
Part of me doesn't want to win any of the contests....because that means I keep getting to enter into the beginning contests! This way it keeps pushing me to get better in getting the subs and with my processing. Trying to make up in process in what I lack in equpiment. I dont have the budget at the moment to replace my crummy r/p focuer, get a coma corrector, LP filter or even mod my camera....In addition, it will help show to people that with low end equipment can get amazing photos under medium to heavy light polluted skies, and may encourage others to take up imaging and even enter into the contests.

Well one thing I learned in the last year is total exposure time! Until last year, I was trying to shoot 2 or 3 objects per night. Due to my light pollution - I do have really bright skies - I had a hard time with processing. I almost thought I had to live with the situation.
Then, beginning of this year, I tried to go for one object per night and sometimes - depending where the DSO was in the sky - go for two nights per object. This really paid off. Due to the fact of having a long total exposure time - most of them are stacks of single 5 min subs - I was able to deal with the light pollution and the processing went easier because I had less noise in the final stacked image.
So, whatever equipment you have, take as many subframes as you can. It'll help you in getting nicer and smoother images.

Eddy
