Dougie:

The budget on my 22-inch was more like 8K, to be honest. Put a Wanted ad on AstroMart. You'll get all sorts of replies. Personally, I think you will be happier with the result if you plan on a budget of $1500-$2000 for a 10-inch, and go with a Royce 10-inch f5, a top quality Crayford focuser, secondary, etc.

So you don't think I could do a 12.5-15" for 2000?

I think you could. The less you spend, the longer it will take, the more you will have to do yourself from scratch, the more "scrounging" will be required, and the rougher the job will be. I don't know what tools you have on hand, but that might be the biggest single cost.

I built my 10" from scrounged parts, cheap "woodlike products", and using hand tools: an electric drill and a jigsaw were the only power tools I had at the time.

It cost me a few hundred bucks, but then I already had the mirror, secondary spider, and focuser.

It's a little heavier than it needs to be, and it's definitely rough in appearance, and I wouldn't trust it in a humid environment, because it's not really well-sealed, but it works great out here in the desert, and it IS transportable.

I am building a 12.5” using premium components such as secondary mirror and support from Protostar and Starlight focuser. The bill of materials cost is about $2000. All of the wood working is being done by a friend who has the tools so I am spared that cost.

I have access to a table saw, jig saw, many drills and routers probably a band saw and drill press as well. Tools is not a problem.
