Hi,
I had some quality time observing Jupiter with my 10" Dob. I don't have time to get into the details, but I tried my best to sketch what I was able to see.
I think the SI was at about 104.9 degrees & SII at 145.3 degrees according to the Meridian program. Magnification was 211x.
Sketch was done with a 4H and 2H pencils. Liberal use of an eraser guided by an eraser shield was employed throughout.
Other details are noted within the sketch.
Have a great holiday!

Sol,
Great, very detailed sketch. You always reach the limit of what is possible to see.

Eric & Frank,
Thanks very much. I also had my 3" refractor out at the same time to give my neighbors a little show. I was a bit confused in that they all liked the view in the little telescope better.

Having to reveil so many details so close together in a short time frame, and putting them to paper! Sol, you did a great, great job.

Great work Sol. Wow, catching the GRS right at the edge of the disc like that is awesome!

Very nice jup sketch, super detail, the seb looks stronger than last year, and you look to have enough resolution to observe the grs/ grs.jr interaction thanks again for posting.

Thanks for all the complimentary words.
25 minutes for a planet sketch borders on being a long time.
I was observing for a while before this sketch, so I had time to sort out the GRS, GRS Jr.(or was it a Jr./Jr. spot?), and various belt details.
I was waiting for Jupiter to get a bit higher and away from a nearby house. Additionally, that SEB rift was really interesting and took most of my attention. I got my wish to fit as much of the SEB rift in as possible.
The main thing here was to sketch as many of the darkest details first. Almst coma-like strokes for this are used throughout so there is no application of drawing long straights lines. After all these details are actually clouds. This left a smaller remainder of mid-toned details while leaving the articulated boundaries of the white details. The last stuff done was to get in there with an eraser and shield wile correcting shapes and sizes of some of the white details that needed some help.
This 1-2-3 approach makes sketching easier so I can observe with less distraction. Over time, this approach becomes subconscious.
Best,

Beautiful sketch in such constrained short time!
I wish that I lived further south now. At 45 degree N latitude in Portland, Jupiter is very low in the southern sky, so getting details now are relegated to only those nights of exceptional seeing conditions from here.
I did not notice your location and latitude. Can you let us know?
Thanks for sharing this inspiring sketch,

Sol,
An outstanding observation of Jupiter showing a wealth of detail. You have recorded the complexity of the major belts (North Equatorial Belt (NEB) and South Equatorial Belt (SEB)) very nicely. The southern border of the NEB contains many interesting festoons. The SEB is full of bright ovals and dark rifts. The Great Red Spot (GRS) on the preceding limb gives the planet the appearance of a "Cyclops." I look forward to your future observations.

A beautiful sketch. I wish I could begin to see that much detail in my 10".
