Morales' _Amateur Astronomer's Catalog_ new
      #2485140 - 06/26/08 07:29 PM

On the strength of a recommendation I read here on CN, I ordered a used copy of Ron Morales' _Amateur Astronomer's Catalog_ from Amazon for some pittance (I forget how much). It just arrived.

I'm slightly puzzled that this is titled "Volume One" ... because I can't find any reference to a Volume Two either in the book itself or on the 'Net (so far - I admit, I've just sort of poked around).

_Is_ there a Volume Two? What I received does indeed seem to cover "500 Deep-Sky Objects" per the subtitle ...

Just wondering. Not a big deal, just curious.

Thanks.

Hi chexmix,

I looked for vol two as well and can't find anything about it. However, I read in the introduction on page 10 next to the last paragraph that this vol was Morales' first 500 objects he observed and recorded. I assumed that the next 500 objects he observed and recorded would be vol two.

Ah. Thanks Richard. I should've looked more closely.

I'll file "Morales Volume Two" away between "Marfa Lights" and "Nessie."

Happy weekend,

Glenn

I found that book many years ago at a used book store, and wondered the same thing. I suspect Mr. Morales had good intentions but never got around to Vol. 2.

I reviewed volume 1 in S&T way back when (good heavens, in the March 1987 issue!) and was puzzled by that, as well. Of course, that was back in the day of Burnham's 3-volume handbook and the Webb Society's 8-volume Deep-Sky Observers Handbooks (from Enslow), so I guess multivolume guides were the in thing. But volume 2 never materialized from Morales. Volume 1 was published by a vanity press, which means the author pays all expenses. That's not cheap! I suspect that return on investment didn't justify volume 2.

It looks like a really good list, though I haven't had a lot of time to look at it.

i used to talk with Ron M. many years ago. he was living in Arizona, i was living on the east coast at the time. he was the American contact for the Webb Society.

i would love to see this book... as for vol 2... i hate to bring this up, but is he still living? i think i heard his health was not well... many years ago.
i hope i am wrong about this...

I wondered myself whether that might have been the reason for there not being a volume 2 ...
