planetary NGC 6765 in Lyra
      #2498027 - 07/03/08 06:15 PM

Hello, I observed this object a couple nights ago with my 12" dob, and it looked like a faint face on galaxy with a very subtle N-S elongation, and slightly brighter in the center, and it was about 35" in diameter, and the magnitude of this faint Lyra planetary is 12.9v.

Thats pretty dim in my opinion, it lies near the much brighter globular cluster M56, and I tried different magnifications on the object and it got better at higher powers, because of the darker background.

This object is much fainter then the famed ring nebula, but was fairly easy to find, the nebula lies just NNW of a faint horseshoe shaped aterism facing South, and about 3' to the SSW of the planetary lies a 12th magnitude pair of stars pointing directly towards the planetary.

This is an intersting object in photographs, but it's even more interesting visually through a large aperture instrument...clear skies

For comparison, here's an observation I made last year with my 18" Starmaster. There are several faint stars involved or at the edges which add to the interesting view.

18" (7/16/07): this unusual planetary was picked up at 174x unfiltered as an elongated glow. The view is confused, though, as a star or knot in directly involved at the NE end along with 1 or 2 additional stars around the edges. Excellent contrast gain with an OIII filter as the edges sharpen up and the halo is elongated 2:1 SW-NE, ~0.6'x0.3'. At 225x, a mag 14-15 star is just off the NE end and the involved knot seems to occasionally resolve into a couple of faint stars just north of center near the NE edge. Finally, an extremely faint star occasionally sparkles at the SW end.

Here is an observation with my old 13 inch Newtonian on a good night.

Seeing=7, Transparency=8/10 13" f/5.6 100X-easy to see disk is pretty faint, pretty small. 220X-still pretty faint, pretty small, elongated 2X1 in PA 20, somewhat brighter middle, averted vision fills in the faint outer round shell. Grey in color at all powers. There is a faint star on the NE edge, it comes and goes with the seeing.

Clear skies;

Jorgen:

Thanks for starting this thread. I was getting ready to make a post about 6765 myself.

Here is an observation I made of NGC 6765 with my 22-inch Dob from my backyard in midtown Kansas City last Monday. I had previously observed this a few times from dark sites, but never from an urban location.

NGC 6765 PN Lyra 22-inch, KCMO, 6/30/08, UHC filter, 22 & 17T4, 22T4w2xPM, T:6/S:6. Probably the triumph of my evening. Definitely the best catch so far. I see this as elongated roughly N/S with possibly two lobes -- sort of a Bug nebula effect. I couldn't see it well without the UHC filter. The best view was with my 22T4 w/2x PM (203.2x). I couldn't detect any color, but could hold it steadily in direct vision.

Actually, after making this observation I was also able to observe NGC 6742, another planetary just over the border from Lyra in Draco. Being able to see both of these from my backyard was a lot of fun.

Here's a link to my observation with a 10 inch Newtonian. Notes follow: NGC 6765

I came upon this odd little treat in southern Lyra. NGC 6765 is a planetary nebula with a photographic magnitude of 13.1 and an odd elongated form. It was a challenge to find with the 10-inch. And once located, this little guy would not easily give up his secrets. My sketch presents a 129X view in the Starfinder, both with and without the OIII filter. A twelfth magnitude GSC star lies at the very center of the rendering. Just 2' to the northeast is where NGC 6765 is seen. The planetary was first detected as a tiny round dot just slightly brighter than the surrounding sky. Switching between filtered and unfiltered views reveals more nebulosity to the southwest. Overall, NGC 6765 covers a 45"x10" area. The 16th magnitude central star was, of course, not seen. Another 33 stars frame the view.

Now, this is a very interesting PN. I looked at this last night after reading your initial post. I was using my 12.5" dob. The conditions weren't all that great with poor seeing and the SQM reading of only 21.18.

I found it first at 107X (17mm T4 Nagler) and no filter. It appeared as a very elongated wedge orientated NE-SW with the NE end being the wider and also noticeably brighter. When I added an OIII filter and increased the mag to 152X and then 243X the shape became more bilobed in appearance and what was initially the pointy end became more blunted. The eastern end was rather motled in appearance. I suspect this was due to the above mentioned imbeded stars. The poor seeing prevented noticing any of the surrounding faint stars mentioned in other posts.

I too made a note of the resemblance to the Bug Nebula, like Fiske mentioned. Interestingly enough I manage to scoop up the "Bug", just a little over a week ago from my northernly location. In contrast, on that night the conditions were so good a great deal of detail was seen in that southern object.

Thanks for the nudge in the direction of this very interesting object. I definately need to revisit it on a better night.
