Recently I started to sketch galaxies instead of the open clusters I was so obsessed with since January when I first tried sketching. (Especially because Virgo is so high nowadays, galaxies are now an easy target )
So here are some of my first drawings of galaxies when arms were clearly visible:
From left to right: M108 in UMa, with a brighter arm towards the West M51 + NGC 5195 in CVn, with arms and the bridge of matter between the two galaxies M106 in CVn, with two clearly visible arms towards the North and South (the smaller galaxy is NGC 4248)
(pls note that these are the shrinked versions, larger originals can be found at my webpage (link below))
I would be happy if you could suggest me other targets where theres a chance to spot arms with bare eyes (too bad that when I last saw the Triangulum-galaxy, I was not into sketching yet ).
Also, if you have similar sketches, I'd be happy if you would post them in this thread.

Hi Ferenc,
What superb sketches! Excellent stuff.
The Triangulum Galaxy will be around again, so you will have plenty of opportunities to sketch it, I'm sure.

Ferenc --
Nice sketches. I particularly like your M106.
The only sketch I have which (sort of) shows arms is NGC2403. Some lads on www.irishastronomy.org have been giving me grief that I haven't sketched M51 yet, but I find it a bit intimidating --there's so much detail to attempt to capture.
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Oh, and NGC2903 is another one worth trying -- I can just make out hints of the arms under NELM 6 skies.

Ferenc,
I enjoy your sketches very much.
Have you tried the Sombrero M104, or M101? They should look marvellous in your scope.

Thank you all for your compliments!
And thanks for all the suggestions, can't wait for a starry night to give them a try!
Jeff, 2403 looks marvellous on your sketch above, I wonder if it shows any detail in a scope that's 4" less, but I will see. Unfortunately I rarely have a NELM of 6.

Really beautiful, all of them, but M-106 looks so much like the pictures I seen of it, it really stands out in the that crowd!

Ferenc,
It is great you started sketching galaxies in addition to open clusters. You have the kind of sky and skill to make that a worthwhile addition. Very nice sketches.
and... Jeff that is a beautiful drawing of NGC 2403. You can see a large number of galaxies with 16 inches of aperture.

Here's another one with a structure of arms, clearly visible with direct vision:

Ferenc,
Outstanding observations of spiral structure within these galaxies. It is not always easy to detect spiral arms even an observer is aware of the type of galaxy being observed. Your renderings of these galaxies are excellent. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Hi, thanks for your kind words! Here's another one I just captured recently, NGC 7640:
Actually I first thought this is a peculiar galaxy like the ones in Halton Arp's catalogue, but after checking out data and astro images, it turned out to be a spiral galaxy. And well yes, now that I look at it that way, those things really look like arms.
(I never check images or data of an object beforehand (perhaps except for its magnitude), so I always get a surprise.)

Nice addition to your growing list of deep sky sketches. You have done a beautiful sketch here with this spiral galaxy.

Very nice galaxy sketches! You and a few others are inspiring me to try maybe M31 soon; although I know the Astronomy Sketching Book advises that Andromeda is an undertaking for a first DSO. Do you have a gallery link here? I'd like your advice on a first attempt at M31.
Also, I am impressed that Jeff mentions a link for the Irish Fereration of Astronomy. I see that they have a long ongoing discussion a year ago about adding a sketch forum there too. I see that others from CN had suggested this for the IFAS too.
Is there anything developing there with a sketching forum yet? I have registered tonight and am waiting for my logon approval.
Thanks for any info,
Mark
