Hello,
I'll be leaving for Mallorca in Spain in a few weeks. I wonder if anyone can suggest me a dark observing place? I'll stay at the eastern coast in Andratx. It won't be a problem to rent a car to reach darker sites.
I look forward to your experiences.

Hi,
I was to Mallorca last year, although not with equipment. But I'd say the east (and of course the south) is pretty light polluted. Spanish people also tend to over-illuminate their towns... The west has some pretty high mountains with only few villages. I'd get into google maps and just look for a place which is easy to reach and with few villages/towns around. r download the detailed map from here
http://www.lightpollution.it/dmsp/starvis.html
and check it out.
Good luck,
Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for the reply!
I just got back from Mallorca.
I had my SQM at hand at several locations. Readings varied from 19.5 from the roof terrace at my appartment in Porto d'Andratx to a decent 21.08 at a darker valley at 8km to the north. These readings are from zenith sky, while the southern direction suffered from a 0.50 drop in reading. The problem is to find a spot that is not private territory and accessible with a car. I was lucky to find a remote construction site that was just cleared from rocks and debris. The views of the milky-way were very good. I could see M7 (still low in the south at 39° lat) with the naked eye, followed by M8, the great Sag cloud, the small Sag cloud and so on. There was a hint of the Pipe nebula, but the remote coastline was present with an abundance of light pollution. I had some rewarding views with an 15x70 bino of M24 with the Barnard Nebulae within visible as two dark holes near the edge of the star cloud. More to the zenith, the sky was darker, with Barnard 142-143 visible in the 15x70 as well. So I did enjoy the clear nights very much!

Hi Rony,
well I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in Mallorca. Yes, I can imagine you had some problems finding good sites nearby. As I said above, I'f guess the west is much better, if you can afford driving up into the mountains...
If you're really looking for overwhelming skies I'd recommend 'La Corse' to you. Should be easy in terms of language for you. I've seen really excellent dark skies there by eye (I could not measure but I'd estimate beyond 21.6mag/sas). I will try it out with my 20" dobson next year - looking forward to that !
Best wishes, Peter
