A Waning Moon Story with Two Sketches
      #2500649 - 07/05/08 11:24 AM

Linda and I were helping friends at a ministry in Southern California during the last days of June 2008. The founder of that ministry, who could easily be named a “mother in the faith”, influenced us when we were young. Although the ministry continues its work, she can no longer function in the power and love toward people that she once had. Now she lies in bed most of the time with people taking care of her. In her nineties, she has lived a full life. The work of the gospel continues through others around her.

She reminds me of the waning moon, which I captured during two successive mornings about 50 yards outside the room where she stays most of the time. At the end of its cycle, it is still a beautiful sight—even when eclipsed by the dawn of another day and overshadowed by desert trees. Likewise, her smile remains bright and you can see the smile in her eyes, although she cannot rise to do what she once did.

Roland and Linda,

Beautiful lunar sketching and wonderful tribute to the founder of the ministry.

Roland,

These are some of the finest waning moons that I have ever seen. Boy, those are strong sketches!

Thank you Rony and Frank. At the time of drawing I began with detail but the rising sun made each scene fade too fast. Hence, the lack of detail in the crescents. But I noticed the trees in both cases because the color came alive in the early desert sun. Only afterwards, thinking on the lady I mentioned in the commentary, did I see the sketches together--linked by the physical transition and the greenery but then also by the life of one drawing to a close. These things together made the sketches strong but it was not premeditated. Most interesting to me and caused me to think.

As I say often, it was reason to give thanks.

Roland

Roland,

Great sketch. I know I've said this before, but I find your sketches as the most unique and personal observational records that are shared amongst us.

Thanks,

Thank you Sol. Glad you liked them. If we could exchange capsules of ability, I would sure like to have our planet sketching ability! Roland

Roland and Linda,

Your ministry founder would be proud of you both for such a beautiful pair of Waning Moon observations. Even such a thin Moon provides light for us all. Thank you for sharing them with us all.

Carlos

Those were pretty great drawings. I enjoyed that foreground trees were included in the drawing, it gave an interesting perspective and really added to the composition.

Judging from your daylight fireball sketch, you enjoy framing things also. When it is possible, I really enjoy framing sketches with things on earth. Roland
