I was wondering if someone here might be able to help me identify a telescope? It was given to me with a few gadgets, but I have no idea how to use any of it. The gentlemen that gave it to me told me he bought it in the mid 80's brand new. I have tried contacting Meade with a serial number, but have not heard back from them yet. Any help is really appreciated.
I am also interested in selling the telescope, but I am afraid that I might package it wrong and damage it, any ideas for shipping? Thanks in advance!

Here is another pic that might be useful. Also, this is the info listed on the ring of the telescope.

Wow you guys are quick.. Thanks so much. I hate to say it, but I think I am going to list her on ebay. I just have no place to put it, or a clue how to use it. Do you think it is worth actually listing on ebay or should I just donate it? I have no idea how any of it works, or if it works for that matter. Thanks again!

Go to one of the Meade groups on Yahoo and ask there too. There are a lot of true Meade fanatics that could probably tell you the month it was made!

Welcome to CN Kurt. I wish someone would have given me a scope like that when I started out. You might want to hang onto it for a few and download a manual for it. That looks like it's around an 8 or 10 inch scope and with the wedge it's already to go for Astrophotography. Give the scope a chance and set it up (We can help you do this too) and have a look around for a night. you might just get hooked on a new hobby. You already found the best Astronomy forum on the web, hang around and look up for a few. Then decide to sell or not. But you will be amazed at what you can see with that scope.

It also appears to be the F/6.3 version of the LX5. F/6.3 LX series scopes aren't too common.

The f6.3 of the LX5 is the LX6. Tha'ts why they called it the 6.

The difference between the LX5 and LX6 is the ability to add Meade's digital setting circles to the LX6. There is no port on the LX5. The LX6 with the CAT (Computer Aided Telescope) was the precursor to the LX200. You could get both LX5's and LX6's with an F6.3 OTA. Meade has alway used the LX__ designation for their worm gear driven scopes starting with the LX2 in the early 80's.

Nope. The LX6 was a completely different drive system. It has nothing to do with the focal ratio of the OTA. And I don't believe the LX5 was offered with an F/6.3 OTA, but there was an option for it with the LX6. There were also two versions of the LX6 drive. One was the "Premier" version with a finer worm drive and the "new" (at the time) Smart Drive (also had double motors in RA). The other had just the "standard" worm drive and no Smart Drive. Both could be fitted with the C.A.T. (Computer Aided Telescope) and have the readout in the handbox.
Just FYI I had owned all 3 at one time.

If it's an f/6.3, it's an LX6 (or the Premier). Not too common? Maybe not as common as the 5, but they turn up with some frequency in the usual used sale venues.

Definitely an LX5. I have owned one since they came out in 1987. I added the JMI NGC-Max computer. The whole thing looks and performs like brand new. I just got my "new" 10" LX200 Classic this weekend and don't know what to do with the LX5. I hate to get rid of it.

Welcome to Cloudy Nights, dwitek. You might want to hold on to a well-functioning LX5. You probably couldn't get more than a few hundred dollars for it, but it will perform like a very expensive scope.
