A PHOTO OF YOUR DARK SITE
      #2502732 - 07/06/08 03:00 PM Attachment (114 downloads)

Don't know if this will work, but I read a lot about dark sites on here and thought maybe we could post a photograph of your favourite viewing place.... I will start. This is a place called Caldbeck moor, and as you can see their are views for miles around....

Here's my favorite. It's a Bortle scale 1 site and you have to go down a washboardy, rough 60 mile road to get there. Once there you are rewarded with a Desert oasis consisting of warm springs and Palm trees. Nights are fabulous and the skies so dark you can walk around without a flashlight, just by starshine alone.

I am jealous!! Here in llinois all you have to do is picture a farm in every direction you look. If you are away from the city lights you are in farm land.

Nice topic and some nice photos. Today here is crumby cloudy with miserable California smoke laying in the valley. Maybe next nice day if this thread is still going I'll snap off a few vistas.
My night skies are what my CSC light pollution map would indicate. Starlight shows me the way around the place at night.

Here's my normal viewing site, and this is where my observatory will be built. There's a little Las Vegas Sky glow visible about 80 miles to the southeast, and a few annoying yard lights about 1/3 to 1/2 mile away, but it's still almost pristine overhead: I can get to Mag. 15.3 with my 10" on a good night.

I've only viewed from this spot once, but I'd love to do it again. It's the Grand Canyon from Crazy Jug Point, at about 7200 feet in elevation, with skies as dark as all get-out.

It's also at the end of a long dirt road, so Randy might want to head this way first chance he gets!

It ain't bad during the day, either.

I think the moderators need to lock this thread to keep we suburbanites from wreching in jealousy.

I also want to add a couple of my own. I want to take pictures first.

Ok! Ok! That's enough already! Do you know how many of us have to go behind the shed in town just to get a glimpse of the moon? These photos could be deemed "cruel and inhuman" to those of us whose best spots are in light polluted cities and towns.
