So that's what Toronto looks like eh?

Maybe we should start a new thread with who has the prettiest (I mean ugliest) LP map. Gotta love (or hate) them colors.

Now I really wish that when the 2003 blackout had occured, I had owned a telescope -_-
Like really look at the diffrence!

My local starfest is 200 km away, but at least it''ll be worth it when I get there

I spent some time and went through only the US listed CSC's to see just how many were in black areas.
Very few! Pretty sad, that's the state of affairs of the night sky.

Here is mine. As you can see, where I live is nothing to brag about. With the trees around the house and the sodium light at the corner of my driveway, the scope will never be used at home. Luckily I live within an hour drive of some decent spots.

I overlayed the LP map in Google Earth.
Upper Beaver Meadows is only 45 minutes away.
RAC and CRC are about an hour away.
The DAS site is about 75 minutes away.

Yea I hear you man. I need a 200km drive just to get to green. Hopefully I'm going to a cottage this summer, and I'll obviously get darker skies but I'm hoping for bortle scale 3 at least.

Thank you for that explanation Matt, I really feel for you guys in them big city's/towns. It's only when I see something like those sky maps that I truly appreciate where I live...

Man....Look at all that blue just 30 miles away from your spot....AND I see a peak of black there....I would be smiling from ear to ear for that one...Charlotte isn't as bad as some of the others, but this is pretty much the way the cookie crumbles around here.

Well I think I'm in the green where I'm at but I have blue to grey/black within 30 to 45 min from where I am. Only issue I have with them is access. I think it's 4X4 and "authorized personnel only". The place I want to go look at has a couple of gates blocking the road leading up to it. Here's the fun part...The company I work for has the right and the keys to get there I'm going to borrow a company truck this weekend and the keys to go check it out. My only light pollution at the site might be about 200 feet up in the form of a red aircraft please don't hit me light. I might see if I can take my bike up there just to scope it out(just a little more fuel efficient than the work truck)
If I manage to make it up there I'll take a few pics for everyone. If not I'll post my backyard where I am staying.

Edit:
Seeing everyone is doing LP maps here's mine. I'm located at the Beak of the funky chicken marked by the +. My area that I want to go exploring is located just up and to the left of his head

Be warned though, once back at home you'll probably suffer from black sky blues. I know I do, every time coming back from a vacation.

Looking west after sunset with the observatory (roof open) Sorry for the dark image.

Looking north (observatory roof closed).

Looking south-southeast.

The horizon to the east is a bit more restricted by a tree line cutting off about 5 degrees altitude.

When you are on your locations chart page, there is a toolbar below the chart. It has a starmap, lp map, and some other things.
