Quick Report: Olympus 8x42 Magellan EXWP I
      #2511919 - 07/10/08 11:41 PM

A pair of Olympus 8x42 Magellan EXWP I roof prism binoculars arrived last week. I used to have a pair of Orion Savannah 8x42 roof prisms, but left them at a baseball game hanging on the back of the seat in front of me. I wanted a mid-priced pair of 8x42 roof prisms for sporting events, birding and camping, but given my track record with day-use binoculars, didn't want to spend more than about $300.

I considered Nikon Monarchs, Canon 7x42 non-ISs and a few others, then stumbled on the Olympus Magellan EXWP Is. The specs sounded very nice - phase and multicoated, BaK-4 prisms, waterproof, fog proof, generous 19mm eye relief, etc. I could see from some of the online photos that these were made in Japan ("Japan" is printed on the front cap covering the tripod mounting adapter thread-in port). The suggested retail price, however, was a bit rich - $359.

Sometimes it pays to shop around. I located them for approximately $160(!). Having used them for several hours over the last few days, I can only say that I am delighted. Perhaps the best deal in binoculars I've ever had.

Regards,

Jim

While it may mean just that, it is not always an indication that the binocular is made in Japan. It is more an indication that the company is based in Japan.

I have binoculars that have Japan embossed on the axle cover between the eyepieces, but they are made in China. Nikon Action Extremes.

The Olympus box also says "Product manufactued in Japan; Box printed in China."

It is a major "no no" (under US law at least) to label an article so that the country of origin designation is confusing or misleading. On Orion Dobsonians, for example, they are very careful to say "Designed by Orion in California but manufactured in China". Many American cars are made in Mexico. On the window sticker it will identify Mexico as the country of origin rather than USA.

If "Japan" and not "China" is the only designation mark featured on a product itself, the article should have been manufactured in Japan. Very interesting. On the Nikons, is there any other indication (on packaging, in the manual, etc.) that the true country of origin for the binoculars is China?

Jim

yes there is. You don't have to look to hard to know they were made in China, but an internet photo that shows the bridge with Nikon emblem might lead you to believe they are from Japan.
