fooling around with jupiter...
      #2512111 - 07/11/08 02:50 AM

i was capping some grs last night and my mind started wa/ondering....

with a focal length of 1000mm and a 2x barlow my planetary images arent large. wanting a larger image scale i decided to experiment. i dont have another barlow for stacking, no extension tubes, and nothing laying around would work. theres always pulling the stuff out of the focuser, and thats what i did.

sliding only the barlow out didnt really help. to my eyes it wasnt getting bigger and i was running out of in focus. i seated it again and tried just sliding out the spc adapter. ah, that worked. i decided to go as far as i could without putting the screw between the adapter and the semi-apo filter. focus wasnt any more difficult once i figured out which way to go. i dialed it in and away i went.

im pleased with the increased size. details seem to hold up well. i think the only things holding the images back are my aperture and the colors. an achromat and my lackluster processing skills do not bode well for the lovely hues of jupiter.

after processing the avis into the ground and feeling so smart the colors still looked like someone yaked on them. tonight i decided to pull the old 114mm f8 out of the corner and mount it up on the orion astroview. ca wouldnt be a monkey on my back this time.

i stuck my eye to the focuser and things looked straight enough. i put the rig out on the patio for polar alignment. no go as storms were to the north and polaris couldnt be seen. i pointed the tube to where i knew polaris to be and swung over to jupiter. transparency and seeing were poor but no matter; im hunting color.

i set up the camera after removing the semi-apo filter. slid it out from the barlow as far as it could go. then came the horrific experience of focusing. the focuser on this ota is awful. terrible. heinous even. a good half inch of slop and shift at least. thakfully back in the day when it was all i had i learned how to dance with this crotchety nag and had focus soon enough.

the first images were bad. 10 mins of acclimation will do that to a reflector. as the night went on and some of the clouds moved out conditions improved to fairly good for about an hour before jupiters meridian transit. the resolution isnt near what ive achieve with my 120mm refractor but i think thats mostly to blame on my not tweaking the collimation, the average seeing, and me still not being proficient with k3ccd. with proper collimation and seeing like im used to i think this little mirror could produce.

i am happy to see a much better rendition of the colors and a lot less blue on jupiter. i make no such claim for the moons that are blue now instead of green.

the moral of the story: jupiter rocks and i see an 8" reflector and a better barlow in my future. maybe monday?

Hi,
that story was great to read - and the shots look promising. - If I was asked to recommend a barlow, I would recommend 2 x Celestron Ultima SV Series. It is very good!

Be well!
