Hi All,
I just got back yesterday from 4 days in Green Bank, West Virginia at the fifth Green Bank StarQuest. We only had about a day and a half of clear weather, but everyone had a good time anyway. The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) has a fine facility there and the StarQuest organizers had arranged for many interesting presentations, so there was lots to do and see.
A nice feature of the StarQuest is a sketching contest--they provide a form and template to help the sketchers and any object is fair game. Some of the sketches that were submitted included a meteor (bolide), the Lagoon Nebula, and Saturn with Titan. They have both children and adult divisions.
I was fortunate to win the contest with this solar observation. The left hand sketch is conte' crayon and color pencil--the right hand sketch is white conte' crayon and watercolor pencil on black paper.
I am pleased that the organizers are encouraging sketching and am suggesting a sketching workshop for next year (there were seven imaging workshops).

Michael,
Excellent. It is good you were there to show them how it is done. Sketching workshop for next year sounds great.

Michael,
Congratulations on winning the contest at the Green Bank StarQuest V with your excellent obsevation of the Sun (H-alpha). You have rendered it very nicely as it must have impressed the judges with it's accuracy. I look forward to your future observations.

Frank, Carlos, thank you both very much for your kind words. There was a lot of interest from passers-by in looking at the Sun and also looking at the sketches.
