yup...it was luck! new
      #2512071 - 07/11/08 01:51 AM Attachment (34 downloads)

I posted my first image a few days ago of Jupiter with my ETX80 and finally had an opportunity to have another go. I don't know how I did so well because the images I got tonight on the ETX are not so good.

On the bright side, I made my first attempt with my 6" dob and it was much better if more work. Tomorrow, I'm going to do some more in depth processing to see if I can't pull a little more detail out by combining the images from several different avi's. I tried just combining the avi's in Virtualdub, but when the images shifts too much, Registax can't align them.

Kolenka, if you see this....you still have me beat!

Nice image! Details are a little confusing in your post. Care to list them? Thanks for sharing

Thanks. Details? Well, 5 days ago I made my first attempt with imaging Jupiter with my new ETX80 and SPC900 webcam. Somehow I managed to get a respectable image using Craterlet & Registax. I attribute it to beginner's luck after tonight's session. I was somewhat better prepared, having made a Hartmann mask and the conditions were seemingly better.

On the ETX80 videos I made, I think I over exposed and under exposed and am coming to the conclusion that perhaps Craterlet while simpler, may not be quite the thing as you are just adjusting sliders for gain, shutter speed, etc.. It seems to me that K3CCDtools for instance, allows you to put numerical values in for these parameters, but I'm going to have to go back and check with the camera attached. In any case, it's only my second session and I have much to learn.

With the 6" scope, it is a bigger image on screen and I was certainly more confident of my focus.

I'm just now reading Robert Reeve's "Intro to Webcam Astrophotography" and am trying to put everything everything into practice, like using 5 fps to avoid compressed video, before I was recording at 30fps.

Well, not much sense trying to get any sleep now! May as well go in to work a little early and try to get out early, take a nap and try again tonight (if I can trust the weather forecast!).

You can focus using the diffraction method on your dob. Point it at a bright star and adjust focus till the diffraction spikes from the spider vanes are sharp. It may be tough to do without a tracking mount, but it's worth it. For the ETX, you'll have to make a mask to introduce diffraction spikes. Clear skies.
