Hi
Seems there are so many quality options for a first bino. I've read many of the posts here (including EDZ) and there seems to be a consensus about the Nikon EX action extreme ATB, and the Orion ultraview 7x50/10x50 also looks like a popular choice. However, when going through the Orion website I came across the Mini Giant 8x56, which looks like an interesting candidate. Approx 25% more aperture, reasonable 5.8 FOV, Japanese fully multi-coated optics, and a reasonable price. Also, the x8 magnification seems to strike a good compromise between decent magnification and image stability Any thoughts anyone??? Pros/Cons ?

I've tested 13 different 8x binoculars. Almost every one of them has a wider fov than that. the Oberwerk 8x56 is also 5.8°. Most of them are about 6.5°. Several are 8. So, if you are going to drop to to 8x, that would be about as narrow an fov as you could get. But, and you made this point, it's not all that much narrower than some 10x binocs.
The fov of the eyepieces is nearly orthoscopic, so i would imagine filed aberrations are well suppressed. I wouldn't expect at aperture to be full, few binoculars are.

13 different 8x binoculars head to head? Can you post a link? Should I just get the Nikon? which is more suitable for a 34 y/o newb with no glasses, the x7 or x10.

7x will give you a wider Field Of View, 10x will allow you to see fainter stars, as well as more in number.

About 6 years ago I bought my son some 8x56 Orion Mini Giants. Field of view quibbles aside, optically they were excellent. Give me quality glass over field of view any day. It's hard to beat Japanese binocular optics. Somewhat often Orion has the Mini Giants on sale.
A great tragedy - 3 years ago my son and I were out front watching a meteor shower at 3am, and he left them sitting on the curb. Gone.
We miss the Mini Giants. Compared to the mediocre Pentax 16x60s we have, the Mini Giants were like pure gold.
Regards,
Jim

x8 looks like a good compromise, but there are very few in the 8x50 range. Most are x40. I really want the extra aperture which is why the Mini Giants appeal to me so much, I still however, want a reasonable FOV. Any suggestions?
