Hi,
just finished a translated version of an observing report of early may with some background information + thoughts on the objects. I called it 'Grand Galaxy Night II'

Contents: (1) NGC 4490 + Supernova SN2008ax (Gx, CVn) (2) Blackeye Galaxy - M64 = NGC 4826 (Gx, Com) (3) The Box - NGC 4169 (Gx, Com) (4) Integral Galaxy - NGC 4236 (Gx, Dra) (5) Siamese Twins - NGC 4567/4568 (Gx, Vir) (6) The Mice - NGC 4676 A+B (Gx, Com) (7) NGC 6166 et al. = Abell 2199 (Gx, Her) (8) NGC 3842 et al. = Abell 1367 = Leo Cluster (Gx, Leo) (9) M83 - Southern Pinwheel (NGC 3746, Gx, Hya) (10) M13 = NGC 6205 Great Globular in Herkules (GC, Her) (11) M19 = NGC 6273 (GC, Oph) (12) The Milkyway, emission and dark nebulae
Hope you like it :-) http://eyes4skies.de/Internet/Astro/BeobachtungsReports/BeobachtungsReports_files/BeobReport_2008_05_08_KABR_engl.htm
Regards, Peter

Nice report!
I've observed many of those, but the Box and the Mice were new to me. I'll have to give them a go next spring (they'll be too low by the time it gets dark again at 54°N).
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Yeah, it's a bit late now for those things (I was thinking which report to translate - as some sort of test here :-). Next time I'll make sure I'll post the stuff more short-term.
The mice are really excellent objects. Very impressive at 12"+ ! Another interesting merger guy may be NGC520, but no tails seen there... Antennae are pretty boring compared to the mice.
Have some clear skies in Ireland !
Peter

Peter --
I have NGC520 on my list (as Arp157), but no observations as of yet. I expect I won't be able to see the tidal tails, but even the cores have pretty interesting structure on the DSS images.
I see now that The Mice are also in Arp (242); I'll have to look them up in my Arp Observers Guide when I get home (I'm currently vacationing in Colorado).
Cheers, -- Jeff.

Hi again
talking of merger galaxies you might be interested in this link:
http://www.cv.nrao.edu/~jhibbard/TSeqHST/
(with 520 in it)
I could refer you to a report of mine on NGC520, but only in German (sorry), which is not really valuable I'm afraid. In brief: in 20"/6mag skies cant't see tidal tails there, but you see the x-shaped appearance, which is also nice.
Looking for candidates for observing you might also want to scan this page of mine here:
http://eyes4skies.de/Internet/Astro/CrossRef/Crossref.htm
Take care of object biases though :-) I am pretty much in the galaxy business, not so much in other stuff...
The page is basically in German, with many links to english stuff, though. Hitting the link called 'DSB' in col 6, you'll get more info, postions etc Otherwise many things should be understandable to you anyway (even though in German). Hitting the NGC# you get a startup of the Guide 8 software (if you have it) already positioned on this very object. I use this page as a crossref in my site (while sitting at my desk), but also during nighttime on my notebook + the dob's eyepiece right in front of me (scanning through all object marked tbo = to be observed)
( col5 Berichte = Reports,
col7 Bemerkungen = Remarks )
E.g. some nice things (i Like) to check out:
NGC 4236
NGC 4567
NGC 6946 (very nice spiral !!!)
...
Have fun !
Peter
