After more time in use I thought I'd make a couple corrections to my initial observations posted above:

Quote:

Having only had two nights out so far, under poor seeing to boot, I'm not making any judgements about collimation at 150x. I haven't experimented L vs. R orientation yet but any leeway toward alignment will be welcome.

I've spent more time with the 150x eyepieces and find the collimation is OK for me; there is a slight horizontal convergence (relative to the images) and a very tiny bit of step but my eyes easily accomodate by crossing naturally just as I would looking at an object closer than infinity. No apparent strain. Switching out eyepieces L vs. R or rotating the eyepieces in increments of 120° doesn't seem to matter. I can live with it!

Quote:

The 33x eyepieces (22.8mm) are ideal for me with 2° FOV and 3mm exit pupil. The view through them has similar characteristics to the 16x70s but with much more eye releif (and a lot more stars!) The eye relief is almost too much, similar to Nikon SEs. These will see a lot of use; they're just what I was looking for.

My original comparison to Fuji 16x70s actually only ends up applying to the sharp, spacious views since the AFOV is approx. the same. Both sets of Miyauchi eyepieces show sharp images right to the field stops; there is no field curvature like the Fujinons. The effect is more like my Nagler zoom but with a 66° AFOV rather than 50°. These are the first binoculars I've owned that don't show either astigmatism or field curvature at the edge of field. Very nice!

Quote:

The 501HDV is a bit wimpy for these 13# bins but it will do until I come up with a mount decision.

The 501HDV head is actually working very well; the 5.5# overcenter spring (like the old non-HDV 503) overcomes the backwards tilt easily by just sliding the QR plate a bit forward on the head. The length of the binocular is a help in keeping balance. I'm not a fan of the new Bogen/Manfrotto head's viscous/teflon combination clutch surfaces; the teflon makes the motion a bit jerky compared to my older heads. The plus side over the older viscous only designs is less stiffness in cold weather.

Still waiting for better seeing and smokeless skies. It's looking like a tough order for a while.

Rich V, well i tried to see Harry today but he returned my call of about 10:00 am too late for me to get by there. I am going to try again tomorrow as he said he would be there and answering the phone after 11:00 am. I'll keep you posted. Wayne

Definitely let us all know what you find out - and you know you can count me in for Ep's that fill the gap between 50x and 150x (wouldn't mind having 70x and 110x or something in that range!).

YEA ! YIPPEEEEE !,I finally got by Harry's today !!!!! He looked everything over and said he didn't think it was going to be a problem at all. He did say that they would probably be a little taller than the Miya's. Of course all of the talk was just that, talk, till he gets into the meat of things.Steuart,I think he may be calling on you since you have done the most experimenting with the Sat III,s. He is going to call me when he gets a pair together and we'll try them out.I left a pair of ep's with him for dimensions.I think he's going to be ready pretty quick with the prototypes.Harry is as nice in person as he is on the phone,so I think we'll have a good relationship. Wayne ,

This sounds promising .

I'm very pleased for the all you Miyauchi owners .

Quite a while before the Cloudy Nights forums came into being , I contacted Harry for some advice about some eyepiece related issues , with no possible sales or purchases involved , and I was very impressed with his willingness to try to help , purely for helping's sake .

Good luck with the project !

Kenny

Thanks so much, Wayne! You've really got the ball rolling now.

Since I couldn't find the 55x I'm hoping for something along the line of 14mm, 10mm and around 7.5-8mm or thereabouts.

Well I don't know that I can add much other than I did take a pair of the Siebert 17mm WA EP's and with the StellarVue OCS screwed into them, they came to focus quite reasonably.

I guess the real question is whether it's worth trying to build an adapter, or just provide a custom sleeve and built-in Barlow for existing Siebert EP's - personally I think both approaches would work just fine.

Finally, there's the question of whether it's feasible to mimic the locking arrangement that Miyauchi uses on its EP's. With 45° EP's this is an issue when nearing the Zenith.

When I talked to Harry, he said he didn't have a means to make a bayonet type barrel. Instead, he said that he would likely use an O ring/groove solution.

Perhaps now that he has seen the Miyauchi arrangement, he'll be better able to access this.

Once Harry has made his determination, we'll probably have to put our heads together and make a "group decision" on what we really want; adapter or dedicated eyepieces or ???.

Having choices is good!

Harry had also talked about a rubber sleeve type arangement to hold the ep barrel in place. At least that is what i think he was talking about. Being an old machinist myself I know it would'nt be cost effective to even try the locking arrangement that Miyauchi builds.I think he will lean more toward fitting ep's to the bore that adapters, but then thats just my feeble opinion. Hey Guys,Just an update to let you know I haven't heard back from Harry yet. He is pretty busy ,so i thought the week time period was pushing it. I'm sure he'll get to it as soon as he can. Wayne

BTW - I think that would work fine. With 45° binoculars, the EP's are worst case at a 45° angle when looking at the Zenith, so even a small amount of friction would prevent them from falling out, but there does need to be something. Miyauchi themselves used an o-ring type solution in some of their binoculars and I agree that trying to mimic the mechanical locking system would be impractical...

Thanks, Wayne, for the heads up. I've been really enjoying the SIIIs with the two sets of eps I have. The 33x are outstanding! They don't cut through smoke very well, however. The 150x still haven't been able to strut their stuff as seeing conditions here haven't been good enough. Somewhere around 100x would be more appropriate currently.

Whenever Harry gets to it will be fine by me. Your efforts are very much appreciated!
