I am preparing a podcast about this particular object and I would like to know your opinions (it is the one close to Gamma UMa at the bottom of Big Dipper's bowl). Many people found it "uninteresting" because of luck of any detail. Still, some people report it as elongated (because of the central bar) and in photos the arms can be seen beautifully. My question is: how much detail have you seen in M 109 and what kind of scope did you use to see it?

The spiral arms were distinct with mottling and a prominant bar with tint of gold, as viewed through the 36"f4.5 from northern Arizona.

No obvious spiral structure in the 10 inch but an interesting object, nonetheless. Here's a link to my sketch & notes: M109.

No real structure noted except an elongated shape in my 10" newt under fairly dark skies. Mr Q

My records of M109 are of an almost face on barred spiral galaxy. This was from Orchard Park NY (red zone) with a 25" dobsonian at 100x.

Generally, most of what I see of M109 in my 10 inch is just a dim oval glow with a brighter core and some of the central bar dimly seen when I kick up the power a little. Occasionally, I get just a hint of the arms as wispy diffuse brightenings near the edges of the main oval glow just off the ends of the bar, but that is about it. Clear skies to you.

Thank you for the great answers. Turns out M109 tends to be an object for larger apertures. I guess that applies to many other cases - a dim fuzzy in a 10" is a stunner in a 36" :-)

I viewed M109 at Värmland Star Party in Sweden back in 1994. Using a Meade DS-16 (inch) @73x, I could quite eaily discern the galaxy's oblique central bar with "handles" on both sides of it. There was a darker area between the bar and each handle. The galaxy reminded me of the greek letter "theta" or a weird Saturn. A 12.5 mag star was superposed on M109, NW of its nucleus. ZLM was then about +7.0.
