Does anyone know (approx) what year Questar replaced the engraved dew shield with the silk screen?

I checked Ralph Foss's "Questar Timeline" on Yahoo Questar Files and the only reference to the Star Chart is in the 1957 to 1958 time frame. "The barrrel is listed as made of Synthane in 1957 and forged aluminum in 1958. Likewise the star chart is listed as made of Synthane in 1957 and Synthane with bonded aluminum in 1958." Not much help but maybe Mr. Ravneberg would know. He has talked to Questar about Dew Shields a number of times (I don't know if he wants to go there, though). Bill

Actually I can't contribute anything. I'm really only familiar with the Dew SHield that existed when my Questar was manufactured (1978). The evolution of how they produced them is unknown to me. Wish I could more help.

The C7 website says that the starmaps from the 50's and 60's were embossed unlike the more modern silk screen versions. The 50th anniversary model also has an embossed chart.

My Questar was purchased in Sept of 1971, and the details of the star chart are etched and enamel-filled. The color of the star chart is a rich sapphire blue, and the moon map on the barrel is purple. The details of the moon map are also etched and enamel-filled. I don't know when they changed to the silk-screen process.

You nailed it Clive. I spoke with Questar and they acknowledged that the engraved dew shields were dropped in the '80s. Since then, silk screening has been the norm with the exception of the 50th edition, which are shipped with the engraved.

The switch occurred sometime after 1982.
