I picked a used pair of Canon 15x50 Image Stabilized binoculars. They work great except that I get a lot of flaring when looking at bright stars. I'm a double star guy, and this flaring makes it tough to spilt double stars.
Can anyone offer any advice on this ?
Thx, Silvio.

What do you mean by "flare." Flare is non-image forming light that would lower contrast by washing out the field. Or are you describing a lens aberation like sperical aberation which would make the point look kind of fat and soft.
If it is a lens aberation, try taking a pair of old lens caps and cut a 40mm or 45mm hole in the center of each to reduce the aperture. This may sharpen the view. You can experiment with cardboard masks to find the best size for the aperture before you cut out the caps. The reduced aperture may also improve flare depending if it is caused by the optical surfaces or the inside of the barrel.

Hi Silvio!
I have a pair of the 18x50s and had a similar problem - I found it difficult to get them *perfectly* focused - brighter stars seemed to have 'flares' protruding from one side or another as I attempted to achieve focus. I suspected something was up with the optics (Collimation was off?) so I sent them back to Canon for service. They never informed me of the exact nature of the problem, but whatever the issue(s), they are now *much* better.
BTW, the image stabilization feature is absolutely awesome!!!

Cheers, -- Craig

I have the 15x50's and occasionally experience this flaring, but it doesnot bother me too much, the glasses have too much going for them to be spoilt by this small problem. Now the eyepieces fogging up----thats another question!! I consider the 15's an excellent (if not my favourite) glass, thinking of getting the 18x as they have been heavily discounted here in recent weeks to around £699 Stabilisation is like a sci fi gift but still better when mounted I use a UA millenium mount, and although the glasses are a little small for a mount this size, the setup is really most enjoyable.
