Skyview Pro goto
      #2515529 - 07/12/08 08:29 PM

I have the skyview pro goto with the 8" ota.
I am trying to control it with my comp. to no avail.
I have a new Toshiba laptop with autostar suite on it but can't seem to configure it to control the scope. What am I missing? My laptop doesn't come with a 9 pin com port but I do have a converter to usb which vista recongizes and installed the drivers for.
I have tried every com port listed but it won't connect. I installed all the ascom drivers just for gigles, still no luck.
In the directions in the manual for the svp, it says that in the utilities section you need to tell the handheld to connect to the rs232 cable. Well, I can't find that on the handheld and I updated the firmware today.
It annoys me to no end.

This wasn't getting any responses in its original location, so I thought I'd move it here and let you guys take a shot at it.

The reason it does not work is that Autostar Suite is NOT compatible with your scope. It is only for Meade telescopes. There are plenty of programs you can use; here are some free ones:

Cartes du Ciel
Winstars
Hallo Northern Sky

I have the SynScan GOTO kit installed on my SVP and I am able to control the mount with Starry Night Pro 5 and the ASCOM drivers for the Celestron Nexstar5 series of scopes. Strange, but that is what worked !

Phil,

If your SVP Goto is this pic, then what you have is indeed the Synscan-GOTO system.

Vista is tricky, but some USB->RS232 dongles can perform exactly the same thing as a physical serial port does. Just need to find the comptible one .

Clear Skies!

Not strange at all - that's how the Orion manual for the Skyview Pro GoTo System says to do it. Also works for the Atlas and Sirius GoTo mounts.

That's my scope in the pic. I will try Starry Night Pro 5. I have the ASBCOM drivers installed already.

Well, it seems I had a usb to serial converter problem.
I bought a new cable and ran the sw and then selected the com port to use and now I can use Cartes Du Ciel.

When I buy something, I like ALL the features to work, even if I'm not going to use them. Such is the case with my HEQ5-Pro/SynScan. I can use Starry Night, Cartes du Ciel, EQMOD, ASCOM, and even Astromist on my Palmx TX with Bluetooth wireless control, to control my mount. But in all practicality, I find taking my Palm TX (without using my Bluetooth wireless control), and just use the Astromist planetarium program to see what's up. Then just key in to the handcontoller the object I wish to view. I can do the same using Starry Night etc. I just find that connecting up another cable is one more cable to worry about tripping over. My mount came with the GPS unit and even after I've set up my mount for the night and the GPS data has been downloaded to the hand controller, I remove it from the H/C as well. I do like the option to contol via computer but the "look-up and enter" mode is a bit easier in my opinion. Whew!

Yeah, I hear ya on the cable problem. My new LT is set up for bluetooth and I think Orion sells some bluetooth gizmo for thier goto systems. I'll prob. have to buy one.
