Fireball seen at 5:05 PM on 6-8-2008 in the Henry Mountians, Utah. Sketched as soon as I saw it, unfortunately didn't have my camera out. The location and size of the meteor, in relation to the northern summit ridge of mount Ellen is as close to what I actually remembered as I could get it. It took it approximately 3 seconds to travel from a little bit above where this drawing begins to where it burned out. pencil sketch colored in photoshop
My fiance and I had just finished climbing the south summit ridge. We were descending towards the north, looking at the noerth summit ridge when we saw a beautiful fireball streak across the sky. unfortunately our cameras were packed away for the descent.
attatched is the original pencil sketch.

I envy you! I've never seen a daylight fireball. (But I did have some nice ones light up the night over the years.)

Great catch. Much rather see your sketch than a photo. Thanks for posting.

Aliamiko,
Welcome to the Cloudy Nights Sketching Forum. Your daylight fireball observation is outstanding. You have recorded this event in a unique way. Thank you for sharing it with us all. I look forward to your future observations.
Are you sure that you did not record some Dragon Ball Z characters fighting up there?

Thank you for all of your replies and comments. It was pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime thing. And it was the highlight of our trip.
as regards DBZ fights. It must be said that the fireball looked very surreal, and not at all what i would expect a fireball to look like. the gold and orange colors were so intense, maybe because they were contrasted against a blue sky. My fiancee remarked that it looked like a phoenix. and i agree.
p.s. it turns out you're supposed to spell fiancee with two e's at the end? who knew this? weird.

Aliamiko, Super sketch--the coloring is great. Thanks for posting the original too--very educational. Lucky of you to be looking in the right direction--those things are easy to miss, even at night. Thanks for posting and welcome!

Aliamiko,
That's the kind of moments that would give me goose bumps.
Wonderful sketch.
Makes you wondering what came down : a rock out of space, or a piece of man made spacecraft?

I was wondering exactly what a daylight sketch would look like... but I didn't expect anything that cool. Excellent job!

Thank you for your replies and compliments. You guys all have some really awesome drawings on this board, so it means a lot when you say you like my sketch.
I wish I knew what came down as well. could have been either one I guess.
and yeah, goosebumps were definitely present when the meteor appeared.

Aliamiko, that is a fantastic record of such a rare and spectacular event. Great pencil work, and digital coloring. This is a beautiful reminder to always be prepared for an unexpected astronomical sketching opportunity!

Welcome and congratulations on finding the Cloudy Nights Forums. You are lucky to sight a daylight fireball! I am impressed with your original sketch. One would think that you do professional art for a living as your sketching skills are excellent. Your finished gradient use of colorization version in Photoshop also looks professional as if it could be for a publication. Have you thought of submitting either or both to say Spaceweather.com? It is a daily sky and solar report online that is run by a NASA Physicist. He seems to like an anecdotal story attached to accompany the images and espcially rare events like your sighting was. Also Astronomy Picture of the Day, although it is rare to get an artwork into that site, as they published one of mine on Nov 17, 2006. You get immediate worldwide attention there. I look forward to seeing your next work! I like your sign off that we can do anything . . . even spell fiancée with that double “ee”. I think that is the French influence to our old world English.
Best regards,
Mark
