Just been to Phil Harringtons website and downloaded a little program called TUBA for binocular addicts. I thought it very interesting.Runs well on Vista. Anyone else use this little program from time to time?

I got a copy of TUBA on CD a number of years ago; I found it didn't go very deep but it's simplicity was good for small binoculars.
Cartes du Ciel loaded with the Tycho and Tycho II catalogs is much more versatile and goes down to mag. 12 if you need it. It's my "daily driver" chart program with many useful functions to help plan an evening. Nice for keeping track of Jupiter and Saturn's moons and current comet ephemeris.

yeh I use Stellarium and CdC. All nice programs. Just liked the simplicity. Good for my simple mind

I started with and still use "Touring the Universe through Binoculars" Phil Harrington answered an email from me. He told me to tell the program to use System Time on the computer. That way it would put the planets on the ecliptic in the right place against the sky. I will have to learn these other programs!

I have been using it for months.I tried the other ones mentioned. I like TUBA better.It is great for bino users. Why go to a mag that your bino can't reach?

In defense of "deeper magnitude" programs, the magnitude limit is generally user selected. With CDC you can adjust from virtually no stars to mag 12 and anything in between.

I have used TUBA not just for bino use but for making star charts in aiding scope location of objects. I think it's an awesome, simple to run program with many user customizable features.
You can find it at "philharrington.net/tuba.htm".
It's also an excellent program for beginners, whether for use with binos or scope.

I've customized and expanded TUBA's database to include the types of objects I observe and can see in my own binos under dark skies. That's one of this little program's strong points. It's easy to do... just modify the text file and run the included executable to automatically convert the file to the format used by TUBA.
You could make any number of "custom" databases, for, e.g., different aperture binos, urban/suburban/countryside conditions, object types, etc., etc. Just place them in a sub-folder, each named appropriately for easy identification, and copy/re-name the database you wish to use and place it in the main folder where the main program resides.
