10.5 x 70mm Helios binoculars mounted.
      #2518564 - 07/14/08 03:46 PM Attachment (15 downloads)

I managed to clean up an old DeVere tripod which I had hidden down the cellar for the past 10-15 years and it is perfect for the 10.5 x 70mm binoculars. The image improves dramatically and makes those rare clear nights worth waiting for. The tripod extends to about 6' 4" so there is plenty of height for me to tuck under being 5'10 1/2". You can hand hold these binoculars but the stars just jump around and I do not have a convenient wall to rest my arms on so they get tired after a short while. When I first joined this forum I could not understand what all the fuss was about binoculars and why people owned so many, well I think I have become enthused with binoculars and I also now understand why you guys own so many.

Very nice , Steve !

Who were you hiding the tripod from , all those years ago ?

Was it a variation of hide and seek ? :-)

Wishing you clearer skies than we've seen here for the past two years !

Kenny

Kenny, being a Lancashire lad my self (Manchester) I hate the thought of chucking anything out because you never know it might come in handy one day. It was a bit rusty in areas but nowt I couldn’t fix and now its as sound as a pound.

There is a current thread called the ‘Big Bad Binocular experience’ in which the quality of Chinese binoculars is discussed.
These Kunming series BA8 - 10.5x70 and 15 x70 versions - really are excellent examples of cost effective Chinese manufactured binoculars that are readily accessible to the general observer.
My 15x70’s versions are equal to my 80mm size earlier Japanese binocular when it comes to brightness and ability to see faint stars. The on axis sharpness of these binoculars is excellent.
Resolution and contrast really is impressive.
My 15x70’s are my most used tripod mounted binoculars.
Hope you enjoy yours. These binoculars are life time keepers.
You have chosen wisely.

Charen, I have two pairs of binoculars and both are Chinese and both are superb. They were not the cheapest of the Chinese binoculars but both perform very well; and I also have two of their refractors and again looking through other scopes these are up there with the best. I nearly bought the 15x70mm but they were a bit too close to my X20 so I opted for the lower power. And yes these binoculars are lifers. Best thing is to just enjoy them mate and don't worry what anyone else thinks.
