Anyone know how the optics of the Orion Apex maks compare to the equivalent Meade ETX optics? I used to have an ETX 90 and its optics were very sharp. Just wondering if the Orion line is as good optically.

I had a Starmax 127, which is the same tube as the Apex. I now have an ETX-125. Optically, they are equivalent as far as my eyes are concerned. I am using the same EPs I used in the Orion and I can't say I see a difference.

To be honest, I have never looked through them head to head, which is the only way to really compare them. I have looked though excellent samples of both though over the last few years. I am not a big fan of the flip mirror thing on the Meade's so I have my eyes set on a Apex127 in the future for lunar/planetary on my AT Voyager mount. But, I have been known to change my mind now and then....

I kind of miss the flip mirror and would now have to pay extra for a plug in one. It's useful in many ways.
If you went for the Meade ETX-125 you'd have BK7 optics and UHTC coatings as well as fairly useful goto as well.
The Meade is F15 where the Orion is F12.
You could also get a Hioptic 152mm f12 http://www.Astrozap.com for similar money and be the 2nd member in the Hioptic Chinese Military Telescope crew
f12 like the Orion but with more focal length than the Meade. No corrector coatings though but it just means you don't have to worry when you wipe the dew off!

Got fed up of waiting for Meade ETX-150 so put this together for £500/$1000

The flip mirror is convenient, I like that the diagonal is built-in. Nothing wrong with the Starmax diagonal either. I liked the all in one OTA and GOTO mount of the ETX. The Orion can be mounted on a GOTO mount as well of course, but as an all in one package the Astronomics package was really good.

IMHO, the ETX is at least somewhat better than the Orions I've tried.
